"Lucky" named as such because any longer in that cold water and SHE (gender confirmed) would've surely been dead like the rest! p
(painted turtles though entirely aquatic are easy to keep. if you or anyone have questions about keeping reptiles/amphibians, please ask as i have a lifetime of experience and far more knowledge in this area than even with wx or ART for that matter!)
*just checkin' in before heading to bed. tomorrow it's off to the Michaeux State Forest (Pine Grove Furnace) for more mountainous adventure! interestingly, there was severe wx observed in Central IL tonight; naturally i missed it...*

glad you asked! turtles are easy to figure out for all you do is flip them over and look... the female underside is either flat or bows outward and this is because she needs internal room to carry eggs. the male on the other hand has a dip in his bottom shell and this is to kind of give him an advantage during mating so he can get "closer" by allowing the rear part of the females shell to "fit the dip"... p
(other species of turtle such as common box turtles are even easier to sex for the eyes of females are dull or colorless whereas the male has brightly colored irises.)
*today it is off to Pine Grove State Furnace to see what other adventures we can find! came to find out that tornadoes were observed in Central IL near Champaign and Rantoul last night. w/b curious to see what for t-storms pop here in Central PA today. would be cool to get some wx pics from here!*

Wow. Sounds like you are having some great times. I don't care for reptiles, but turtles are okay!

Give us the details on the tornado.
Anyways, the turtle i always wanted to see (not actuallly have) is one of them alligator snapping turltles. Those are one of the scariest looking things i've ever seen (on tv). I always wanted to check on out in person! Have you seen one of those. I believe its called the alligator snapping turtle...?

as for the tornadoes that set down, take a look at the NWS LSR for Central IL!

(several of the guys based in/around Champaign who chase got the show of the season!)
as for Alligator Snappers, i saw one once many years ago at Clyde Peeling's Reptileland located in N PA. that thing must've been the size of a kitchen table! looks just like the common little version but on steroids...
another scary/ugly looking turtle is the "South American Matamata"... do a search using those words, that creature is downright GNARLY!
