NHC pleads for immediate evacuation of NO

Watching 4WWL and the Mayor of NO is on (10:05 PM) and is describing how the NHC has pleaded with him directly in the past hour to order a mandatory evacuation immediately, and not to wait until morning ... he says he can't do that, for legal reasons, but is recommending an immediate voluntary evac of NO to begin right now.

right now, does it really matter what the legalities are? We are taking about saving lives. Constitutional rights should be suspended in NO IMMEDIATELY to ensure the safety of the citizenry there

To hell with the law. Put loudspeakers with horrible music on it to drive everyone out. Blare sirens.

I wonder what legalities the mayor is talking about.

On a side note, "constitutional rights" should not be suspended...I don't know what you're talking about; but the rule of law is what saves lives by preventing anarchy. Even with martial law, there is no outright suspension of order.

Hey, I'm not saying that if there's some law in the parrish that says the Mayor can't do this or that after this time because of some asinine reason, then I'm all for suspending that.

The difference is, there is no way in hell that things should be taken to an extreme. I mean, what, you want people pulling out guns and shooting to get around other cars along evac routes? You want people out looting supplies and stealing gas? Total anarchy. Then MORE people get hurt.

That's all I'm saying. There has to be a line. And if Derek is a fascist, well, he can reconcile that with himself. :D

Great forcaster though.

/end rant.

Oh, gosh. Sad, but probably a lot of truth to that.

Get a clue people - the mayor and senators have moved their families outta NOLA. Get out now.

I'd be in Houston right now if I were a resident of New Orleans.

Hell, we're keepin a close eye here. Any 100 mile change in the track and we're going to be in deep poop. We're waiting for that North turn any minute now.

Hopefully there is a reverse 911 system in place that can be activated at 6am or whenever.

If the senate does not grant the chancellor emergency powers, chaos will erupt!

I'd be in Houston right now if I were a resident of New Orleans.

Hell, we're keepin a close eye here. Any 100 mile change in the track and we're going to be in deep Number 2. We're waiting for that North turn any minute now.

If I was a resident there yesterday, I'd be in Little Rock today.

There is NO WAY I'd ride out a 4 or 5 unless circumstances for me dictated otehrwise....

This is a sad reality. There is no way the mayor can order a mandoratory evacuation at this point. If he did he would make the city liable to anything that happens to the forced evacuees. At this point it is physically impossible to evacuate the entire city. Plus the fact that anything that happens to forced evacuees could potentially make the city liable. Some scenerios:

1.) People forced to evacuate stuck in traffic dies because of the lack of 72 hours notice -- City liable for deaths
2.) People forced to evacuate dies in auto accident -- City liable for deaths

Potentially, the city could set themselves up for a massive class action wrongful death suit with a mandatory evacuation at this time even though the residents has had enough warning through media/politicians to make the wise/life saving decision.

The mayor did the best thing he could by mentioning what the NHC pleaded him to do and saying he could not do it for liability purposes (and I don't like this mayor). At that point, everybody should know what the situation is and make a wise decision. For myself, me and the family (5-7 carloads) will be leaving around 4:30 this morning headed to Atlanta.
