WV image question

#1 Postby Cookiely » Sun Aug 28, 2005 7:04 am

On the WV image it appears that Katrina is getting flattened on the side facing Lousiana. Is she butting up against a ridge or something? Is she going to start turning now to the North? Will whatever she is hitting move her more to the West? Any thoughts.

I noticed the same thing. IMHO I think Katrina may be starting to feel the effects of the trough that is approaching from the NW. Check out the WV loop & look around the NW Gulf and you can see the SW to NE arriving in the NW Gulf. Thoughts & comments welcomed.

Can that also explain the increase in forward speed?

Not convinced, have a close look, what is really happening is not flattening of the north east, it's bulging and extension in the northern and western cloud mass, which was making the NE appear indented, but the radius of the NE side did not reduce, it stayed the same. In fact, the NE side is building a band ahead of the storm

Yes Katrina will soon fell the effects of NE flow aloft associated with the trough. The pocket of dry air NW of Katrina will continue to erode and when it fully does the NE flow will bump up against Katrina and begin to turn it NW then NNW and eventually N-ward. So that turn as predicted should begin sometime today.

Could this NE flow steer Katrina more towards the north east?
