When should people give up on evac'ing?

I'm wondering if there is a cut-off point, a point when it becomes too dangerous to leave.

Being stuck in traffic right now is okay because Katrina is still a ways away. But what happens if your in traffic and the storm is blowing up? When do you leave and when do you stay?

Does this question make any sense?

The powers that be will close all bridges at a certain point, making it impossible to evac anyway. I am sure they have been telling people at what point the bridges will be shut down. They just showed some people on the news who said they had no means of evacuating. Most were single moms or grandparents taking care of little ones. May God be with them! So scary. They are alll in my prayers.

They ordered the mandatory evac WAY too late imo. This monster is picking up forward speed, SE LA already getting some bands........

Someone early on said that a minimum of 60 hours was needed to safely evac everyone out. I don't know the validity of that statement but if it is true, they started worse than way late considering that some of bands will be affecting them in the next few hours.

I am absolutely terrified for those who are sitting in their cars with no place to go when Katrina starts knocking at the door. Imo, these evacs have potential to be disasterous.

Once the winds reach tropical storm force it may be to late to evacuate. Emergency services cannot respond when winds exceed 45 to 50 mph due to wind profiles on the vehicles. Personally, I wouldn't stop trying to get out till I was dead cause that's the option if you stay. Every mile you can get inland from the coast increases your chances of survival.

Just saw one of the evac routes on CNN, its a longggg bridge thats about 3 feet above the water, not sure where that is, but I darn sure wouldn't want to be stuck in traffic there!

TWC also said that TSF winds are already being felt on land now. I don't see the bridges being left open much longer.
