Season starts officially at EPAC

#1 Postby cycloneye » Thu May 15, 2003 6:21 am

Today it begins in the EPAC and let's see how it will be in that basin and on average 16 systems form.

Here are the names for the EPAC season in 2003:

Andres
Blanca
Carlos
Dolores
Felicia
Guillermo
Hilda
Ignacio
Jimena
Kevin
Linda
Marty
Nora
Olaf
Patricia
Rick
Sandra
Terry
Vivian
Waldo
Xina
York
Zelda

Of those names Linda comes to mind because she was a strong cat 5(185) mph six years ago without affecting any land.

Some images of Powerful Hurricane Linda in 1997 that Cycloneye mentioned in the above post. I believe Linda holds the record for strongest sustained winds in an EPAC hurricane at 185mph.

WOW! Thanks for the pics. Very nice structure. That eye is so well defined. Thank goodness it did not hit any land.

If you look at the EPAC today, there is that scattered pop-corn type convection that often precedes development. I guess we'll see.

Yes from that pop-corn type of convection then they join and be one concentrated blob so let's see what comes out of that area.

No Shannon Linda was not retired because it did not affect any landmass but if it were the contrary then yes Linda would be out of the list.

I remember how Linda did briefly threaten the tip of Baja California during its peak strength. Fortunately Linda ran into cooler SSTs and weak steering currents, so it ended up dissipating well offshore. Being the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the EPAC, I can imagine how scary it was for those residents.

Btw, there is one new name up there. Anyone know? I'm sure Ticka does. Below is the storm, Pauline, that was retired.
