Did anyone notice that as the eye of Hurricane Katrina was moving just to the SE and E of Lake Pontchartrain, a burst of convection developed right over the lake? That was very impressive to see.

SSTs in the lake are very warm and could have strengthened the winds a bit over New Orleans...
Sudden burst of convection...

This doesn't mean that the storm as a whole strengthened. Rather, just the localized winds that were coming from the north off the lake were probably strengthened by this burst. Radar during that time also showed higher DBZ values near New Orleans. The city could have easily gotten 100 mph sustained winds in this burst with possibly higher gusts.
The eye is filling in as it moves northward just as expected, so no strengthening now that it's inland...
