AT 1137 AM CDT...WIDESPREAD FLOODING WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE
PARISHES ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE OF LAKE PONCHARTRAIN IN THE GREATER
NEW ORLEANS AREA...AS WELL AS IN PORTIONS OF PLAQUEMINES PARISH.
THIS CONTINUES TO BE AN EXTREMELY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. THOSE
SEEKING REFUGE IN ATTICS AND ROOF-TOPS ARE STRONGLY URGED TO TAKE
THE NECESSARY TOOLS FOR SURVIVAL. FOR EXAMPLE...THOSE GOING INTO
ATTICS SHOULD TRY TO TAKE AN AXE OR HATCHET WITH THEM SO THEY CAN
CUT THEIR WAY ONTO THE ROOF TO AVOID DROWNING SHOULD RISING FLOOD
WATERS CONTINUE TO RISE INTO THE ATTIC.

Incredible. I can say, if it were me...I probably wouldn't have thought of that. But I guess I wouldn't expect to have to go to attic to survive.

I got a hammer and an ax and a crowbar, but I'm holding off on breaking through the roof until the last minute. Tell someone to come get me please. I want to live."

That was a grisly discovery after Floyd came through Princeville. in some of the homes, they found people who had drowned in the eaves of their homes. It never occured to them that the water would kept rising.

And it did.

These are the posts that should be collected into a booklet for future storms, and distributed to the people who insist that they can "hunker down" and ride it out. The term can easily change to "Hunker-DROWN".

It's the, "it couldn't happen to me", syndrome, ways need to be developed to snap people out of this mentality.

Those intrepid families 'riding it out' in their little houseboats and yachts sure would have had an interesting, if somewhat abbreviated day.
