Reports from Mobile, AL

#1 Postby BamaMan » Mon Aug 29, 2005 6:38 am

Weather going down hill here. Rain has been fairly constant since last night, and many areas are beginning to flood badly. Winds beginning to pick up, but according to local mets we are just really beginning to feel the tropical storm force winds. Saying that here in West Mobile, by mid-day we should have sustained winds well over hurricane force, with gusts possible up to 130 for quite a long period of time. Still have power for now, and hope all of my coastal neighbors are safe. Gonna be a long, long, day

conditions are going to be rough, but i really don't think you will gust anywhere near 130mph, even in far western mobile county.

should be an interesting storm though. could definitely gust to 90mph today.

Whew! Winds starting to pick up quite a bit here in Downtown Mobile......coming out of the Southeast at about 40 to 50 mph. Easy to tell wind direction down here as I can look out my office window at two free swinging construction cranes (about 45 stories high).....they make great weather vanes!
It will be interesting to see how much water gets piled up here at the North end of Mobile Bay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't go over 12 ft.

I'm about 10-15 miles west of Mobile. Got some gusts in that one band that had to be 60. Power went on and off. Wonder how long that'll last. Not too bad though.

I have to get offline now. More power company "load balancing" since the BVI is operating at a net power deficit! You guys, please stay safe!!! Will be thinking of you and of course you are in my prayers. Will check back this thread as soon as power comes back on.

According to channel 5, the Mobile Bay funnel scenario has played out and parts of downtown Mobile are under 10-15 feet of water.

From what I understand, the Fairhope pier is gone. Houses along the Eastern Shore of Mobile bay have waves going thru their living rooms. The storm surge is still rising in Downtown Mobile.

the eastern shore or western shore ?

i would think the mobile county (western) shores would be worse than the baldwin county shores from the wind direction (though im sure just the sheer amount of water pileup probably spells quite a bit of problems for both sides).

Actually both. They just got through interviewing a couple of homeowners from Fairhope.....their houses are along the Bay on the eastern Shore, an area close to where I live. Listening to them being interviewed was very sad as they described what they were seeing....their homes being engulfed by the water. I am actually at work over on the Western shore in downtown Mobile. In a few hours, when the winds shift.....it'll make matters even worse on the eastern shore. I hope my house is still in one piece when I am able to return.

Uh-Oh........we just lost commercial power on our downtown grid. Hopefully I'll be back up soon.
Batteries will hold for awhile......once the waters recede, we can put our generator in place.....take care everyone!

Oh no this sounds really bad. Just saw the Alabama governor on tv, and he said it's going to be bad for a while yet. Please check in and let us know, when you can, that you are OK!!

Flooding on Dauphin Island Pkwy

#18 Postby Mobile Expat » Mon Aug 29, 2005 2:30 pm

Just talked to my cousins who live off Dauphin Island Pkwy, in Sherwood. Dog River has risen about 12 feet and many of the businesses on DIP there are flooded. My cousins live on the river; their boat has floated out of their boathouse and into their backyard, where it is bobbing next to the patio. No power since early this morning but the telephones are still working. They guessed the highest sustained winds there were around 90 mph. There are trees down all around.

More than likely. The people being interviewed live just South of what used to be the Fairhope Pier. I heard much of The "Grand Hotel" at Point Clear is suffering water damage.

The waters in downtown Mobile are starting to subside. Looking out my window, it looks like the winds are starting to swing around to a more Southwesterly direction which should help push the water back into the Bay a little faster.
