OMG....that is not good at all, the city is so close to the western eyewall at the moment

Do a google search for New Orleans and "formosan termites" and you'll see how this city has been devastated by the "super termite." A lot of these structures only need a stiff wind to knock them over.

I'm listening to a live feed and 100 year old buildings in the Quarter are still standing. The damage will be very bad but it looks like it won't come close to the worst case scenario. It looks like most of the levees will hold. *crosses fingers*

A FEMA representative just called in to CNN and says there is little major structural damage in New Orleans. Lots of windows blown out and stuff blowing around but clearly not "total structural failure" of anything that he knows of. He says the levees appear to be holding up, but that the city has to deal with some fresh water issues related to the rains and the pumps failing. He has a foot and a half of water in his street. Says that trees and tree debris are blowing down the street.

What was exaggerated? The reports of the levees being breached and peole on their roofs in East No, the windows being blown out of the hotels downtown? No, we are not seeing the "doomsday scenario" which was a computer generated modeling. However the winds are not steady at 150+ mph in NO(thank the good Lord) and so far the surge has not topped the Lake Ponchatrain levees. We have yet for the winds to come steady out of the North clear across the lake with all of the surge already pushed up into it from the East. I am hoping the Northern levess in NO do hold. Some on the East side have already been breached.

It has been reported a little while ago that the levees holding back Lake Ponchatrain have been breached.

The wind was out of the east before the eye passed and then started out of the north... so that's at the very least breaching some of the levees on the Lakeshore.

Structures rendered to rubble. Nothing standing. It's not hard to believe with anything over 110 mph winds.

On the news, I saw plenty of highrise buildings with broken windows. Nothing completely devastated though (based on what little they showed).

people are forgetting towns like Venice and Cutoff, which got 150-180 mph winds at landfall...no reports AT ALL from those areas yet
