If you are going to retire this storm right now, you might as well retire just about every hurricane...

Todate Katrina won't be retired. But give all the data I am pretty sure it will reach at CAT 3 at least at landfall and end up being of a similar force as Ivan last year.

After all that this hurricane has done not only in South Florida but in Louisiana,Mississippi,Alabama and what later in states more north from the gulf will get it is a given the name Katrina will be retired.

Not all of them... Ethel (assuming it WAS a Cat. 5), Cleo and one or two Cat. 5 fishes were not retired.

Monetary damage and/or human toll. Any country affected by a named tropical system can request its retirement at the end of the season.

Ah, there were a few names that were retired in the EPAC for political reasons... and the infamous "Frances" affair.

well I think that although the 175mph Cat 5 did not come ashore this will be a memorable storm. I think we are not getting a lot of reports yet - too early - damage assessment needs to be completed. Also the loss of life - I hope to god no one died but I just heard on Fox that in Grand Island 7 people that stayed behind are unaccounted for....
