The scary part is how bad the reports are from Biloxi and Gulfport which are the areas people are just beginning to get into...have yet to hear word one about Pass Christian,Bay St Louis,and other towns that were closer to the eye..I don't think it is an exaggeration to say coastal Mississippi no longer exists and that hundreds, possibly thousands are dead

What else can be said that has already. A very heartbreaking day indeed. The more I read the worse it is. We feel your pain from far away. It could have easily been any of us. Many prayers needed.

A channel 5 field producer called in a report of the LA/MS state line to Biloxi. The St. Tammany Parish troopers tried to block her from going into MS on I-10, telling her they couldn't guarantee her safety. She said Bay St. Louis was totally under water, they couldn't even get off the off ramp for the town because of flooding.
She was sounding pretty shaky through much of the report, like someone who had seen things no one should have to.

jburns - it's just the nature of where you live. I work in Atlantic City and NJ would be in big trouble if something like this happened there. You will recover!

We have a member, Frank, in Biloxi who has posted great pictures of the new shutters he built and just installed on his house there (in the Preparation forum). It looked like he faces the Gulf; flooding could be bad there. I don't remember seeing any posts on whether he was leaving or not.
I emailed him this morning but I'm sure they wouldn't have power and phone lines/broadband could be down too.

We have been vacationing in the Biloxi/Gulfport area foir the past 15 years. It turned my stomach reading about the news reports from there. I called my sister and we talked a long time about how many great memories we have from there. I can't begin to imagine the devestation and heartbreak of the residents along the Gulfcoast. I also wonder if the area will ever be the same again. My first stay there in 1993 was at the "Sun Tan" Motel. Nine months later my first daughter was born. A special place indeed.........

I am sitting here right now trying to comfort my grandma. She lives in Picayune, MS right where the eye passed over. She keeps hearing the TV reports and she is crying. She may not have anything left to come home to. And she has some friends and neighbors who did not evacuate and are feared dead. We are trying not to mention anything in front of my 10-year old little cousin who lives with my grandparents. She is just a child and that would be too upsetting to her. My aunt and her friend are also here from New Orleans and are worried about their homes as well.

Second Street runs from Pass Christian down to Gulfport.. It's basically about 100 yards from the beach.. Lots of expensive homes in the area..
I'm fully expecting not to have anything left once I get back to what was Pass Christian..
