The Inevitable Dauphin Island Question!

#1 Postby Homey » Mon Aug 29, 2005 9:34 pm

As with almost every Northern GOM storm, so many are curious about how Dauphin Island survived. Does anyone know???

Thanks,

I seriously doubt it this time around. This one had such a huge storm surge.

I heard earlier on MSNBC that the Emergency Management said that they knew of 7 people who said they were staying on Dauphin Island to ride out the storm. Has anyone else heard this?

Yes, I heard seven people stayed to ride out the storm. I also hear those seven people have not been heard from. I haven't heard a peep from the island on any blogs or newscasts.....the silence is probably a bad, bad sign.

I hope you are wrong, but I am afraid you are right. :(

MSNBC: Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine describes Dauphin Island as having "widespread destruction" and says there "may be" people missing. The island experienced a 20 foot storm surge and 15 to 20 foot waves, MSNBC says. Nodine adds he is not sure what the situation is on the island yet because authorities cannot get down there.

http://www.hwforums.com/2144/index.html They have people on the island reporting on damages. Mostly they are on the east end as the west end is still mostly impassible. Seafood Gallery restaurant is gone and Boardwalk realty is basically gone. Houses in the pines seem to have done well. Bay side house of course are in better shape than beachside. Sounds similar to the damage they had after Ivan but worse of coursre. They have heard from 6 or 7 people so far, they aren't aware of anyone trying to ride it out on the west end.

If you love DI this is a good place to bookmark and join if just to watch during hurricane season.

CNN just aired video, looked fine to me. Then again, I know nothing about the island.

They just showed a small bit of footage of Dauphin Island on CNN. Some structures still standing, but looks like a LOT of damage. Significant portions of the beach gone. A lot of flooding. Very short clip so couldn't see much more. But it looks like a total mess, hard to see how any people who might have been on the island would have survived. I think the water must have totally overflowed the island and drained off. I vacationed there not many years back and it looks like a totally different shape than it was.

damage worse than from Ivan last year. Westend now five or six different islands. Also Oil rig platform broke off and is yards off the beach in Dauphin Island.

Also the pier made it through the storm, sand has been pushed around it and the water is only a few feet deep at the end of the pier. Channel 5 helicopter finally cleared to fly over island.

WKRG is flying their chopper over it now. The west side of the island facing the gulf is essentially destroyed. There is the top of an oil rig right off shore in the surf. Here's their webcast link.

Reminds me of damage done during the tsunami. It has cut the island into pieces.

That flyover is a shock! I can not imagine what it was like for the people who stayed. Thank God as far as I know they only stayed on the East end. The West end is just so sad to see. I can't imagine if I owned one of those houses that was still there but way out in the water now. Heartbreaking for those people who just rebuilt after Ivan and Dennis. Got to question rebuilding again. Anyone know how that rig was attached?

Did anyone hear any mention of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab? Our daughter spent some of her college time there and loves it.

It's located on the east end of the island, not far from the Fort Morgan ferry dock.

From what I am hearing on the news is not good. I believe there is a lot of destruction in DI. The main road was washed out. If I hear anything I will post.

Sealab and a good part of the east end seem to have come through well. I guess pine trees and grass make all the difference. The west end is pretty sad.
