What is going on in this world today?
What is wrong with people today? What is wrong with society in general? We hear about murder every day of the week...yet what do we do. In my home town a girl goes missing and a community gets into a aguement about race, instead of how did this happen to begin with... These are just questions that race through my mind every time I turn on the TV, amd was wondering if anyone felt the same way, or has a different view.

Definitly a sad time we're living in, but i guess it has more to do with the speed in which we get our news then actually the news itself. Bad things have been happening forever. I know it sounds bad, but they will continue to happen. But we should all do our best to stop them from happening atall. A neverending battle that should be fought IMO.

Sorry to hear about the young lady in Savannah...and it's just as tragic at this end of the Peach State...
I learned to my horror this afternoon that on Friday afternoon...a 14 year old girl was viciously attacked ONLY three houses down the street from my dad's home in Newnan -- she and Beth are friends. The girl got off the school bus and entered her home alone to find three attackers waiting on her (her parents both work); the child was repeatedly sexually assaulted and beaten nearly to death
Her mom found her unconscious, bound and gagged in her bedroom
She's still in the hospital tonight...suffered a severe concussion and two broken arms. The authorities have three suspects in custody...a 19 year old out on parole after serving time for molesting an 11 year old girl ; along with two 17 year old juveniles.
What scares me so badly...not only did it happen so close to Beth's home; but for several years she was also a "latchkey kid" -- just as the little girl lying in the hospital tonight, Beth also rode the school bus home to an empty house (until dad got home from work at 4:30)..over an hour later
I've had cold chills tonight just thinking that could have happened to our baby (I warned dad and Beth's mom then it was dangerous...that someone needed to be there when she got off that school bus).
I'm praying for that precious little girl and her family...and I'd really appreciate it if you would also.
Thanks In Advance,
Perry

Here in AZ
those two 17 year old scumbags would be sitting in ADULT Jail with the 19 year old sleazeball and facing ADULT Charges in ADULT court with the end result being hard time in Prison vs a cushy time in Juvie.

Actually, people today are probably nicer and less violent than even a century or two ago and if you go back towards the earlier part of the millenium, you will find that people were indeed quite vicious. It's the fact that people today are turning away from violence on a large scale (something which hasn't happened before) that all violence now seems to be extreme and not the norm.

Well said... and in addition I think that JQ makes a good point also. The vast amount of information that we have available at our fingertips can get overwhelming at times.

I think what widremann said is true, but I had'nt really thought of it that way. In previous ages there was all kinds of violence, neglect, abuse, starvation, disease, you name it. Back then, all those things were considered normal, and no one made a big deal out of it.
Now that we are more "civilized" we have higer expectations. When something like this happens we are (rightfully) outraged.
I don't think that human behavior has changed a bit, and arguably may be better now. It's just that we have a higher standard, more things get reported, and with our communications, we hear about everything.
Now for individuals who have been victimized, we need to have all the compassion in the world. It's really callous to say "that's the way it is" because people hurt and suffer loss.
In a related matter, with my own kids, I see them getting in trouble for things that wouldn't have been a big deal when I was a kid. When I was in school, for instance, fighting and violence among the kids was almost tolerated. There was a "boys will be boys mentality." Nowadays, students get suspended for fighting. And I shudder to think of some of the things that I got away with as a kid, that weren't even reported.

This space for rent.
People might be less violent and more civilized than they were 300 years ago, but when a senseless violent crime happens to a little girl you've seen riding her bike with your own baby sister, it makes you stop and think.
I've went to visit dad and see her and Beth sitting at the picnic table in the back yard playing with dolls, playing with Beth's cat. Just a little girl...a sweet, innocent child that never hurt a fly.
I just talked with my stepmom; she said the three suspects in jail all had
serious criminal records (child molestation, assault, battery, drug charges). My question is WHY they were out of prison in the first place?
Dad and my stepmother are thinking about moving. There have already been several home burglaries in their subdivision -- not sure if the three suspects in the attack were responsible for the break-ins or not (they also burglarized the home where the girl was attacked).

I agree Garrett. Take SARS for example. A hundred or more years ago, a flu going around China wouldn't have been news, but now the whole world is worried because 3 more people died today halfway around the world (I don't say this to trivialize their deaths, just to making a point). My wife will barely take the children outside, on a hundred-acre farm. Technology is great, but it's getting a bit out of hand.

Sometimes i think people are making up this "end of the world" armaggedon thing to further their ideals and such. I never thought about it the way widremann put it, but i like the way he said it. People are much better off now than even 50 years ago. No more hangings, guillotines etc. We are more cautious in things we do b/c we don't want drama due to the fact that the world will find out in no time flat. Plus there are just more people to do bad things. When bad things happen i still think people should try and make the place they live a better place to live in...no just run away. How is that going to solve anything? No one would/could force me from my home.
