Breaking News ...Civilians ordered out

#1 Postby Downdraft » Tue Aug 30, 2005 9:31 am

FOX NEWS reporting martial law declared and ALL civilians have been ordered to evacuate or leave the City of New Orleans. This is being done to prevent a health crisis of historical proportions. There is no power, or drinkable water anywhere in the City and fire trucks are running out of fuel with no hope of replentishment.

From the NO Times-Picayune:

Only way out of New Orleans is West

The only way people can leave the city of New Orleans is to get on Crescent City Connection, head to the West Bank and take Highway 90 to Interstate 310 or I-10 on to Lafayette, authorities said this morning.

Interstate-10 eastbound, toward Slidell and the Gulf Coast, can't be traveled. Several sections of the Twin Spans have washed away and other sections of the bridge are structurally unsound.

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway has been opened to police, fire and other emergency vehicles after an initial inspection concluded the 24-mile long bridge was sound, WWL Radio reported this morning.

No other vehicles will be allowed on the bridge; and access to St. Tammany Parish remains restricted. The condition of U.S. Highway 11 across the Lake is not known.

Sigh. This is the million-internal-refugee scenario about to play out.

Good news, I know it'll be hard for people to leave but they've no choice at this point.

What if they don't have the means to leave, my God this is tragic beyond words.

Per Fox...Martial Law has been declared in New Orleans...life called "unsustainable" by the Emergency Manager..they don't know why the city is flooding or how to stop it

Because if the people stay they'll probably die. It's only "good" in a relative sense.

I wonder how they will get them out? Last night, a reporter on WDSU said it took him an hour to drive a few blocks as he had to avoid debris in the roads. If emergency vehicles cannot get fuel, where will civilians get it?

People will be transported out by the Military. Under martial law you have no constitutional right to refuse. Argue the point and your looking at the business end of an M-16.

This was absolutely necessary, no other thing to do.

I'm tremendously relieved that they haven't wasted time in making this declaration. Fire could break out in the city at any time, and there'd be absolutely no way to stop it.

This is a good question, we were just discussing at work.

I guess they will have to bus people out.

The smart thing would be to tell people to start walking out, and the most needy will be provided transportation first. It's absolutely the best and only thing to do.

Thank God they are doing this.

On a smaller scale, I remember the Red River Valley Floods of 1997 and what they did to Grand Forks, ND. Once the levees around GF broke the entire city was swamped. A couple fires broke out and much of the downtown soon was torched. Nothing could be done at that point...

Shepard Smith called into Fox News on his way out of New Orleans at a little after 10 am. He said the last message they heard over radio was that martial law had been declared and that anybody that could get out needed to. He also said that the water was continuing to rise in the Central Bussness District and that there are thousands of people there.
