Audubon Zoo

#1 Postby tgrkpr2000 » Tue Aug 30, 2005 1:06 pm

For all the animal lovers: Just received information from the president and chief executive of the Audubon Nature Institute, which oversees the zoo. Mr Forman said "It was devastating and even with that, it could have been worse." A few flamingos died but he said that there was little other loss of animal lives. All the staff seems to be ok. So at least some good news during this terrible time. Hope to have news about the other zoos in the affected areas soon.

Do you have any information on the area? That part of uptown I think is fairly high elevation. I have a friend who lives on Broadway about 6 blocks from the zoo and many other friends in the area of Tulane and Audubon Park.

I am so glad to hear that! I work at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida and am also an ex-veterinary technician. We have a very sophisticated mobile unit which was dispatched at the request of the USDA to Charley and Ivan last year. It has everything from triage to a sterile surgery unit. I have already heard a few terrible stories about the animals there. I know that some do not consider their lives as important but to me, they are like the children, they don't have a voice and they don't have a choice. I have not heard that our team would be dispatched for this. It seems rather futile as the water (drowning) has been the cause of most deaths with humans as well as animals there. I also know that LSU has a vet school and so does Alabama, hopefully, they have a plan but I am sure that we are on standby.

I love ray of light stories. As I wait for information on Slidell, I am so worried. Animals are a huge part of my life, and this makes me feel significantly better for some reason.

Is it near New Orleans? I'm always happy to read reports like this.

New info on zoos: Audubon zoo and the aquarium received very little damage. They are still assessing the animals situation. (so, good news hopefully for Recurve). Baton Rouge, Birmingham and Montgomery Zoo - no electricity but no lose of life, animal or staff. Jackson Zoo - very little damage, no lose of life, 1/2 zoo has electricity. Still waiting to hear for Alexandria Zoo. :D
