Expert: Superdome at one of lowest elevations

#1 Postby N2FSU » Tue Aug 30, 2005 12:22 pm

wwltv.com is talking to an expert now on the levee system in N.O. and he is referring to elevation maps. He says that IF the levee breach can not be stopped soon the Superdome WILL continue to flood because it sits at one of the lowest elevations in the city. He says they need to find a way to SOON get the water pumped out (and admits it has never been done and no one knows how to) or else all the water will naturally flow to the Superdome.
This is an unbelievable catastrophe.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see more suicides the longer they stay there. I feel sorry for the people who had to witness it.

They say the guy had just finished a game of dominos with someone, got up and walked over the the balcony and told the people below to "watch out" and he then jumped. They say he was of right mind and didn't appear to be distressed beforehand in any way.

How on earth are all the people in there going to be able to get out if the water keeps rising due to it finding its lowest level in the city. Are there elevated exits or is the roof going to need to be destroyed to airlift them out one by one. Oh my God, this is terrible.

Dear Lord, Please give people the comfort, strength and above all, the peace to get through this horrific ordeal. Amen

I am horrified what I'm reading and seeing that's going on down there. :( And I feel so helpless. I'm gonna hug my children a little harder and a little longer tonight. :(

Apparently, there are balconies on the upper levels leading to the outside. I read they let some of the evacuees sleep there overnight to get some fresh air. I would presume they'd rescue from these.

They also said earlier that they thought the 17th Street Canal breech can be plugged.

People are getting pretty restless and desperate in the dome.

Reportedly National Guard members are preventing anyone from leaving, and inside it's hot, filthy, and getting more desperate all the time.

The restrooms are filthy and the plumbing doesn't work. It must smell absolutely awful there.

I predict a stampede within hours. They can't stop that many people. It's sad, because many will die when they leave.

The New Orleans downtown heliport is on the roof of the parking garage next to the superdome.

It would be difficult to airlift 10,000 people but seems logical that they might use the heliport to deliver water, meals ready to eat, sandbags pumps generators etc.

The heliport is at an altitude of 30' probably connected to the higher elevation areas in the superbowl.

An earlier report said that the national guard was still ferrying people to the SuperDome from various specific locations in the city. How high would the waters rise there? That's a huge building, so I'd imagine it is probably the best place to be considering the circumstances. The best of the worst, if you will.

I thought I had heard a blurb earlier on Fox that they were going to start evacuating people who had stayed through the hurricane out of the city of NO to somewhere else, but I didn't hear where they were planning on putting all of the refugees. Anyone hear anything about this? I am hoping that the "powers that be" are scrambling to find an answer for these people. Disease is soon going to start to become a really bad problem.

Shep Smith just announced that the generator at the superdome is showing signs of stress. They don't know how long it will hold up. Also, the water is just continuing to rise. Man this is just so bad.
