They interviewed a young man this morning who had worked at the aquarium he said two sealions had died and one had been shot in someones backyard. He was very broken up about it. It was really sad

Honestly I think they shot him because they couldn't control him. I kinda figured by what this young man said it was the handlers who put him down. I believe he said they had 27 sea lions and seals at the aquarium.

I just can't be sad about sea lions. I mean, they're cute and I like to watch them... but <sigh> with thousands more than likely dead, and tens of thousands homeless...a sea lion death, while sad, just doesn't break me down.

They've got more important things to do right now... like trying to save everyone. It's sad, but the thousands that are dead and the many thousands if not more that are struggling for survival is much sadder.

I did not once compare human life to animal life.

I am totally aware of the human suffering and tragedy.

I am also aware of animal suffering and tragedy. because i have posted about sea lions and dolphins by no means downplays human suffering.

I am not a human nurse i am an animal nurse. It is my passion.

I care about them, someone has too, they are LIFE too.

Noah,

I hope you don't think I was criticizing your love of animals. I really wasn't. I'm just so overwhelmed by the whole thing. I feel just like I did after 9.11. Sad. Helpless. Wanting to help and feeling like donating money isn't near enough.

I am with you on this. being a native New Yorker myself, this feels similar.

I am not upset, just venting as well. God speed.

I share your sentiments Noah. I am an ob/gyn M.A. but my passion for animals has been with me since I was very very young. My thoughts and prayers are with every family, every lost soul and all of you, our weeping nation during this time. That being said.....

Noah brought up an excellent point.... at least as humans we have a choice.... at least we KNEW what was coming.... animals can sense danger keenly but they cannot understand WHY such a thing is occuring to them. Think of that poor seal, all the stray cats and dogs, squirrels, etc.. what about the dog reported to be wrapped up in electrical wire being electrocuted and crying? <UGH> I heard that right before I went to work yesterday and cried like you wouldn't believe. What about the idiot people that left their pets behind????? Are you kidding me? If you think that you are in danger and decide to evacuate why in God's name wouldn't you take your pet? One lady came back to find her apartment gone and crying out " My dog !!! In that case I have to say that my sympathies go to the dog, bash me if you will.

I have donated my blood to the Red Cross and even some of my money but a good chunk of it was also donated to the Louisiana SPCA in an effort to help some of these poor animals.

:sadly:

Well, I was trying to say it with the utmost in sensitivity the first time, but 2 police officers shot the seal lion last night. I think it was either already sick/wounded, and they had no way to transport it to water.

As others have stated, there is NO way you can compare to the human loss of life....

But, being a horse owner and lover, my heart breaks for all the horses (and other livestock) who died in this hurricane also.. No chance to evacuate, they had no idea what was happening to them..

I can only hope that the horses were numbered with paint and their legs and hooves lathered with vaseline to protect them.. avid horse lover and former owner.

There were people who, despite their own problems, were trying to help the sealion. I come from CA and I know what a healthy sealion looks like and this one was in bad shape which is why they put it down. It could barely raise its head but I'm sure it felt the people's concern because animals are more sensitive to us than we realize.

It broke my heart when Anderson Cooper said that the Police shot it twice in the head. They said it was to prevent suffering. I can only guess that it might have had internal injuries from getting thrown around in the surge.

Look, big whoop, a sea lion was shot. I'm gussing a lot of strays are being shot right now. Rescuers don't exactly have time rescue animals right now, there are bodies floating all over the place and still tens of thousands of people who need rescuing.

nice, very nice.

We as humans have but one chance to prove that we are compassionate toward other humans as well as towards all that are less fortunate then we are. We as Americans have a duty to show compassion towards all that are less fortunate then us. And we as Christians or as a spiritual people have a spiritual obligation to be stewards and protect our environment and our animals. This is our life. And I would struggle to carry the sick woman over one shoulder and the sick puppy in my free hand. I don't see a difference.
