I received the following from a long time friend and former classmate. He is retired military and his comments a respected. He is referring to his son who is a New Orleans police officer
"(Son's name) needs prayer that they get national guard and state police backup as soon as possible. At times the station is literally under siege.
People from the local community projects are attacking with AK47's.
At first it was only two, but they are increasing in numbers every
time they return. Thus far they have fought back and come out on
top. They are running out of ammunition and food. Sewage is backing
up. Policemen are getting sick as a result. Many policemen at other
prescints have gone so far as to desert completely. One entire
district is gone. No one knows where. We have been in contact wiht
the govenor's security's office, the adjutant general's office and
the state police and they keep insisting relief is on the way but
nothing has shown up yet. The national guard who are in the city
have no weapons because they were sent in as part of the relief
effort and their guns were stored at Jackson barracks which is ten
feet under water, More are supposed to be on the way. If anyone has
any political connections...USE THEM. The situation is just as grim
for civilians in the city because they cannot get food water or gas.
No organized effort to distribute or get these things."
Please continue to pray and fell free to pass this inormation on.

Contact your LOCAL elected representatives--no matter where you live or vote in the US. Ask your senators, congressmen, etc. to do something.
They will read your e-mail or letter and perhaps some of them can do something. They DO have political connections!
So even if you are writing to some senator in Maine or a Mayor in Indiana, use your local political connections to make your comments.
It's the best idea I have at the moment...
Besides, what do you have to lose?
