Detailed article: Superdome is hell; children raped inside

Article here

Small excerpt:

NEW ORLEANS — A 2-year-old girl slept in a pool of urine. Crack vials littered a restroom. Blood stained the walls next to vending machines smashed by teenagers.

The Louisiana Superdome, once a mighty testament to architecture and ingenuity, became the biggest storm shelter in New Orleans the day before Katrina's arrival Monday. About 16,000 people eventually settled in.

By Wednesday, it had degenerated into horror. A few hundred people were evacuated from the arena Wednesday, and buses will take away the vast majority of refugees today.

"We pee on the floor. We are like animals," said Taffany Smith, 25, as she cradled her 3-week-old son, Terry. In her right hand she carried a half-full bottle of formula provided by rescuers. Baby supplies are running low; one mother said she was given two diapers and told to scrape them off when they got dirty and use them again.

At least two people, including a child, have been raped. At least three people have died, including one man who jumped 50 feet to his death, saying he had nothing left to live for.

Its a refugee camp. Unfortunatly things like this happen in refugee camps. I really dont think the astrodome will be much better in terms of violence nor will the eventual tent cities... but I dont see any alternatives.

"These people have nothing," he said. "I have a violin. And I should play for them. They should have something."

I have read many posts on the forum about shooting looters but raping others is another thing for ME and I say 'SHOOT' the ones who does that! I have no pity for something like that!

Things should improve once they get to the Astrodome where there will be more security.

Just read an ABC report that said they were slowly starting to evac the superdome out through the parking garage then by truck to the busses.

Water is several feet deep around the dome.

In case you don't remember, the tent cities didn't show up for more than a week after Andrew. Conditions were similar in South Florida until the military showed up. The governor needs to request federal help.

Escape from NO

#16 Postby RichG » Thu Sep 01, 2005 8:36 am

What is wrong with these people? Shooting at helicopters? Raping children in a refugee camp? I had no idea NO was such a high crime violent area. Even if they rebuild the city I think NO is going to have a problem with tourism. We had plans to go in December and we were going to reshedule to later next year but I think NO is not a place I will ever go to. I know it may be percantage of the population but that population is ruining for the good folks.

Take the poorest people in any city and put them in a place like the Superdome in these conditions, without proper authority, and you'll get a similar outcome.

Not in miami... our cops would shoot them or at the least taz them. Brutality needs to be taken with situations like this.

This is not the way NOLA was. I had a the privilage to vacation there and had a wonderful time. The people and culture were wonderful. Everyone was so full of happiness that even if you were having a bad day, all you had to do is walk down the street and you couldn't help but get a smile on your face. It has really saddened me to see this beautiful city be destroy, but saddens me even more that what some of these *$%&^#$ are doing there is ruining the reputation of such a wonderful place. Yes it had it bad area's.. all large cities do. But on a whole, NOLA was a fabulous place to vacation.
