Will you move away from the coast?

#1 Postby CFL » Fri Sep 02, 2005 2:58 pm

I asked a similar question last year after Ivan. Just wondering if anyone is seriously reconsidering after Katrina?

Well, I might think differently if I lived in the gulf. The last 2 years have been a hurricane magnet for them.

I love Charleston and would not consider moving.

I live near Atlanta, Georgia......some 260 miles inland, and would LOVE to live along the seashore; in fact, that dream may soon come true (lord willing!). Saying that, if and when I relocate to coastal Georgia......I do so knowing full well the risks (from hurricanes) and potential danger of doing so.

Even though the Georgia coast has been spared the wrath of a major hurricane for over 100 years.....I know it is only a matter of time until another one strikes Savannah or Brunswick, and that every hurricane season brings that scary nightmare to reality...

I have lived here all my life. I could not imagine living anywhere else except maybe Destin, Fl (lol) I don't exactly live beachfront. I am only about 25 miles inland as the crow flies. But, at only around 12 ft above sea level that is not saying much. I still very much get affected by hurricanes. If Katrina would of just moved a tad bit more to the west, I don't doubt that we would of got the surge here. My dad was saying as we were evacuting, if our house was damaged we were moving out of state far inland. But, I don't think he was serious. His job relys on us living close to the coast. He works offshore on an oil rig near the mouth of the MS river. He is on vacation right now for 3 weeks, so he still did not go check on the status of his rig.

Thanks! :)

It was a very stressful vacation.....beginning with visits with two terminally ill uncles in Tennessee; culminated three days early because of Katrina's vicious impact (concerns about my many friends and several relatives in Mississippi & Louisiana) and related threat of gas shortages/ rationing along the Georgia coast. Hopefully I'll get back down there for a few days of R&R before winter.

Definitely, and since long before even last season. Looks like the coastal areas everywhere are just loading up with development, ready for "the big one" of their very own. Forget Central Florida - here in Orlando, the rush hours are getting longer and longer, there's more litter, more screaming and yelling, and more and more pawn shops and check-cashing JOINTS are popping up.

That AND the humidity, bugs and six-month hurricane shooting gallery?

I don't think so! :(

I am almost to the point of moving, another hurricane landfall will be the trigger for me I think, doesn't matter what Cat or damage it does. Charley was hard but we pulled thru it. After seeing Katrina, it's a whole different thing.

I'm selling my house and we're scheduled to close September 15th. It can't come fast enough for me even though I've spent the better part of my life in this area. I just sit on pins and needles hoping nothing else comes up here between now and then.

I wouldn't live anywhere else. Beautiful in the fall, winter, spring and summer. When a hurricane is headed our way, we evacuate. It's as simple as that. We have not even had a missing shingle in the last three hurricanes in Baldwin County, AL. We are 1 mile from Mobile Bay. We are lucky.

Directly on the beach, yes, many problems. But inland a mile or two, just downed trees. Well worth living in paradise.

I'll live without electricity 7 days with 358 days of paradise anyday!!

I do realize I am VERY fortunate. I am VERY upset about my neighbors who have been devestated by this hurricane. There are many. You just step up to the plate and do what you can for your neighbors.

It has been a depressing week but good news was heard today. The French Quarter (my favorite restrurants are there) is intact and being guarded on every corner. No flooding, fires, looting, etc at all. Actually, it looks better tonight than on New Years Eve!

My husband talked to a friend at the Grand Casino today and he will be paid for at least 3 months. The barge they were sitting on was old and they were already in the final stages of a plan for rebuilding their barge. The Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana will be back. It will take time but I know that I am ready to step up to the plate, as my neighbors are.

There is a lot of good that comes out of a tragedy. You will see these blessings soon.

NO WAY! Considering where I live, though. Up here in NJ, we get a hurricane every 100 years. Once in 1821, then in 1903. I suppose our time is coming, but I can handle a Cat. 1 or 2. Nonetheless, I feel bad for the people in harm's way, but it is the price to pay to have paradise. Still, my heart and prayers are out to victims of hurricane damage everywhere. I pray that one day forecasting will be so perfect that there will be no deaths from hurricanes ever again.

On a lighter note, welcome aliceesk to storm2k! Enjoy your stay, and don't be afraid to post or ask questions ever. The more people the merrier.
