I averaged all the damage from where it made landfall, including all the island, Mexico, Cuba, exc and gave a mean number.

Frances-4

Ivan-7.5

Jeanne- 6

Charley- 6.5

Andrew- 9

Camille- 9

Dennis (I don't know much about it because I was on vacation when this one occured so I won't give a number)

Emily (Same thing with this one as Dennis- not enough information about damages it caused)

Katrina 10

I don't have time to think about the others, but I'm here in New Orleans and Katrina is definately a 10 or higher. I have never seen such destruction.

To a person who has lost everything they own, or has lost a loved one, that storm is a 10. We are talking about peoples lives and livelihoods which is more important than racking up dollar values.

I have a hard time with the notion that tragedies can be compared and rated. That's morbid to me. Anyone who can calmly and cooly count up the costs of tragedy probably has never experienced tragedy.

Very very very well said. I tried to make a similar point inside another thread as well.

It's kinda interesting for me having been in the eye of Emily (Yucatan side) to see how the damage I saw firsthand compares with other big storms. What I saw was a terrible amount of damage--but not particularly impressive, considering Emily's strength. The town of Playa del Carmen was VERY lucky that it got spared the full force of the storm by a half dozen miles. Emily was nice enough to avoid the poorer parts of Quintana Roo and focus on the relatively sparsely populated/wealthy resort area near Tulum.

Reading the opinions of people who follow these storms and know a great deal about the big ones helps to put things into perspective for me.
