Future of the Superdome

#1 Postby al79philly » Fri Sep 02, 2005 6:34 pm

I found an interesting article about the future of the Superdome. It raises some good questions - after all that has happened in there, can we really hold entertainment events there again.

SUPERDOME SHOULD COME DOWN

It's nearly impossible to even attempt to think ahead to the coming months and years at a time when the immediate suffering of so many of our fellow Americans is raw and fresh and powerfully heartbreaking. But as we sift through more and more information regarding the true state of affairs in New Orleans, we predict that the ultimate fate for the 30-year-old Superdome will be demolition.

The exterior damage is obvious. There are holes in the roof that no one will even be able to begin to assess for repair until the water is pumped out of the Crescent City, which won't happen until December at the earliest. Until then, the interior will be exposed continuously to the elements.

And the elements likely are only the tip of the iceberg. Based on reports regarding the conditions inside the facility resulting from several days of occupation by those seeking shelter from Katrina, we can't imagine anyone undertaking the task of restoring the structure to its original condition.

Human waste is everywhere. The building is flooded. People have died there. How can it ever again be a place of amusement and recreation?

It can't. And it shouldn't.

We believe that once the full consequences of our government's failure (Democrat, Republican, or otherwise) to apply foresight and common sense to the relief effort are measured, a difficult-but-inevitable decision will be made to raze the structure. It otherwise will be a constant reminder of the misery, suffering, and death that has unfolded this week, and we suspect that not even the most loyal and devoted native will want to venture through its doors ever again.

As we've said before, issues of this nature have little relevance today. They will have little relevance tomorrow. And they will have little relevance a month from now.

But thinking toward the future gives us some relief from the helplessness that we feel and the guilt that we experience every time we take a drink of water, eat a bite of food, or flush a working toilet.

And when we think toward the future of New Orleans, we can't imagine the Superdome being a part of it.

By the way, the site is http://www.profootballtalk.com. (This is a great site for all of us football junkies by the way.)

Shoot, if New Orleans can survive this storm and actually rebuilds - I think the Superdome should be torn down and a memorial park put in its place. Whether people should have evacuated, could have evacuated, should have had 5 days of supplies, should have known better, should have been black, white, rich, poor, blue, green, etc. - we need some kind of memorial to those that were lost.

Seems like the obvious place to me. The Superdome has turned into Hurricane Katrina's ultimate Ground Zero.

Excellent idea, I completely and whole heartedly agree. That would be a terrific move.

No Waveland was far worst hit - New O sufferd Leeve fail and the damage there was from flooding which could have been caused at any time in the future by an earth quake or just poor maintance etherway one day the levees would have failed.

I think that the dome should be rebuilt to stand tall again.

Oh, clearly, the Superdome will never be used for sports again. I think that for some people, just the sight of the thing will throw them into a PTSD attack.

I think they should clean it up and use it as an animal shelter for now. Can you imagine all the poor animals that are left stranded with nowhere to go, no food or water and no one to protect them? It is a terrible human tragedy, but remember many people did not evacuate because they could not stand to leave their beloved pets behind. So for those that perhaps lost their lives to stay with their pets. this should be considered in their honor.

I think that the Superdome should be razed and the property or at least a part of it should become a place where the unidentified remains of the dead are interred. I assume that most of the unidentified dead will have to be cremated. Storing the remains and placing them in appropiate vaults during one beautiful, grand, huge New Orleans style funeral, might help to bring closure to those who lost family and weren't able to find or identify them.

The grounds surrounding the vault area could be developed as a beautiful park that would symbolize the rebirth of a great city. Some of the NO statues could be saved and reset in the park. Some of the beautiful iron work I remember from my honeymoon 47 years ago could be salvaged before buildings are razed and used to to line walkways, enclose gardens, etc.

Of course, I have no idea who owns the property and whether it would be possible but I think it would be a fitting tribute.

I hope Tom Benson finally gets his damn wish. He wanted to leave Louisiana so bad.... now he can go. San Antonio awaits the Saints.

The state of Louisiana Owns the Superdome, and leases it to the Saints.

Same here... they been dragging on for years with threats to leave... now watch Benson change his attitude now.

Any word on where the Saints decided to play their home games? My best bet would be Tiger Stadium, but I heard that wasn't going to happen.

I have three words:

Implode it baby!

Let's see, every time I watch the Saints (which isn't often) on national TV, I'll think about "hey, suicides and rapes took place there." I'm sure that the citizens of NOLA, when they return, won't want to have anything to do with it either! Not to mention everyone will wonder if they sufficiently cleaned the restrooms!

We sure don't need that crap in BR right now. We are having enough trouble dealing with refugees, we don't need professional football games here. Think about it we now have 600 policemen and our population has grown by at least 1/2 million this week. I know/hope many of these will not stay here long term but I would bet that since we are the city closest to NO we will get a lot of people staying. We simply do not have the manpower to manage the traffic, fights, drunks, etc that go along with football games. I am scared to think about the first tigers game and a couple of days ago I was chomping at the bit to get into tiger stadium on a Sat. Night.

I think, but I'm not positive, that Houston has offered the Reliant Stadium to the Saints.

Not confirmed though - might want to Google it...

LAst thiong I heard was that the Saints will be playing in the Alamodome in San Antonio or splitting their time between there and Reliant Stadium in Houston. However, I doubt the Houston option is open now with almost the entire complex except for Reliant stadium being used to house refugees.

Where do the Texans play? I figured they didn't play in the Astrodome, but I wasn't aware there was a new stadium they played.

What happens to the season ticket holders? Would they refund the ticketholders? I'm sure many could use that money right now.

They play in the Reliant stadium which is right next to the Astrodome. It's a touchy subject with a lot of us Houstonians - lots of people didn't want the stadium built. And well, you know what happened with the Oilers and what-his-name, their owner... it left some hard feelings...

Ah yes. The owner illusion that the grass is always greener in another city. Although, this may be a painful comment, the Oilers, or whatever they refer to themselves these days, seem to be doing okay, the Cards are another story. Take a bad owner with a bad team from city A and let him move his team to city B, and he's still a bad owner with a bad team!

You guys are better off with the Texans (in the long run) and being a lifelong Redskins fan, you are in good hands with Charley Casserley. Give them time.
