Had the 1992 season not started so late, Andrew might well have been Bonnie. *brr*
Yep...there was a Sub-Tropical Storm in 1992, before Hurricane Andrew. If the naming system was the way it is today, that Sub-Tropical Storm would have been named...and it's name would have been Andrew.
Also, there was a tropical depression...that could have been Andrew...or Bonnie had the Sub-Tropical Storm been Andrew.
Hurricane Andrew could have been Hurricane Bonnie or Hurricane Charley. All three names have been nasty USA hurricanes

On another note, when did they decide to begin naming subtropical storms?

I agree with most of those. Danielle is usually a fish or an insignificant tropical storm, and Earl is ususally a half-arse hurricane. Both names should be removed for overuse and because they are silly names for storms anyway.
I disagree with retiring of Bonnie. I live in NE NC, and while Bonnie was full of suprises (like becoming a hurricane again over Nags Head), she was nowhere near retirement status. Heck, I disagreed when Isabel was retired, and I was without power for two weeks. A hurricane is by definition a bad storm. Retirement of names should be limitied to the worst of the worst (in the league of Andrew, Hugo, Ivan, Camille, Katrina, and so forth).

2002. Sub-Tropical Storm Gustav
Thats correct... And what a storm it was along the Outer Banks... Had our first real taste of a storm on the Banks, with 2 more the next 2 years..

I thought the same about Floyd going into 1999 and initially when Ivan of 1998 formed and was a fish from the get-go, I thought that was a silly name. And we all saw what both of those names have done....
However, I have one caveat about Ivan. Despite being a fish in 1980 and 1998, after the season of 1998 was over, for some strange reason, I started having bad vibes about the name Ivan. Those vibes never went away.

I just in the last few months have been getting a hairy vibe off of Hermine for 2010. Sure it's a long way off and it's past is very weak, but see my above post about Ivan.
Jerry sounds like a big one, if not in 2007, just some year. Also, no matter how "weak" that name may have been, I unfortunately don't think Jerry will be weak forever. Maybe not big while Humberto is in rotation (one of the names that most scares me, if not THE most), but someday, I wonder about Jerry.
My list of names I'm most sick of:
Arlene
Beryl (though I do think it will eventually be a hurricane name)
Cindy
Danny
Edouard
Felix
Gert
Harvey
Irene
Josephine
Karen
Lisa (but only by default since it's the only one in rotation used twice)
Marco
Nicole

The scary one is Kate. It screams of "Cat. 5".

Juan should've been retired at 1987, but at least it was retired in 2003.
Alberto should've definately been retired in 1994, but it still remains today. Same with Gordon. If 3000 people killed isn't something that allows for retirement of a storm, then what is?
Claudette should've been retired, if not in 1979, then in 2003. But it isn't.

Gaston caused $130 million last year. If you think Gaston should be retired, a WHOLE lot of other names deserve to be retired then.

But a lot of other names didn't destroy several blocks of the most historic part of Richmond.

I'm not denying that that kind of damage is bad. But was the kind of flooding associated with Gaston just localized to that area of Richmond?
Just because a hurricane destroys just several blocks of any city, small or big, does not warrant its retirement alone unless it killed scores of people as well. Eight people were killed in Richmond, excluding one indirect death, and yes it's too bad that they died, but eight deaths is not enough alone for a name to be retired either.
Also, it doesn't matter how famous or historic the localized area of destruction is. If the storm causes only a little over $100 million, no matter how devastating to that ONE area it may be, it is simply NOT going to be retired.
If Gaston were retired, then Erin of '95 and Bertha of '96 would have been deserving of retirement. Those two combined for still less than $1 billion (Erin was 700 million, Bertha was 250 million).

I couldn't agree more.
Especially when the media puts their shake in 'Killer Kat', 'Ivan the Terrible', et.al.

And the confusion it causes, (EXAMPLE: "Do you mean Hurricane Gustav in 1978 or TS Gustav in 1986 or Hurricane Gustav in 1995, or TS Gustav in 2004, etc)
STOP THE INSANITY!
IMHO they should do away with the names altogether.
