I find it a bit hard to think of the NOPD as being disgraceful right now. They have been dealing with this for 6 days now with limited resources and support. They've been outnumbered. They are just as hungry, thirsty, wet and exhausted as everyone there, and they STILL have to perform their jobs and attempt to keep peace in a situation where it's next to impossible.
They have families of their own to worry about, yet, they are there trying to save their city. It's really very sad.

How this thread has swung as the misinformation changed in the early reports, over a single discrete incident, ought to be enough of an example by itself to make people think twice about snap judgements on how our federal government has responded to this catastrophe.
Let's wait until things are a little quieter, when we can look back on what happened with much clearer picture of what happened and why. People here have already partially timelined the events leading up to this hurricane's impact, and that information alone was enough to convince me that we cannot be sure at this time regarding the relative quality of the federal response.

Agreed. Within 6 months there will be a 6-hour series on the Discovery channel explaining it all.

No kiddin, cudos to the NOPD members that stayed, those have got to be some dedicated, tough individuals.

Yeah, I'm just waiting for someone to say 'excessive force!'.

I still can't believe these scum were firing at human beings that were trying to help everyone there, including the gunmen.

Yep, I think you nailed the motive. Thank God those cops were there to protect those guys.

My guess is that they'd formed an alternative powerbase (i.e. band/tribe/gang), and were controlling territory. They may or may not have realized the men they were shooting at were Nat Guard contractors, and they may or may not have cared had they known.
