I know that the NAM/ETA will ace the forecast on Hurricane Eta.

Does anybody think that Hurricane Nu will be a new type of hurricane?

Cows are going to be affected in Hurricane Mu.

What if Hurricane Pi forms on March 14? And if that doesn't happen please give me a good helping of pie.

LOL do I love the Greek alphabet!!! :D

Sorry I think I'll just shut up now, carry on please.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, no one could seriously think that the legal status of a pending insurance claim would be affected by the presence of a similarly named storm 6 years after the date of the loss. You can say a lot of bad things about the legal system, but even the dimmest attorney can probably tell the difference between an Andrew of 1992 and an Andrew of 1998!

I realize that's what the NOAA and WMO document says, but I just cannot believe that this really enters into the thinking when a country's met service propose names for retirement (and it is the met services that propose retirements).

Well... I have to rain on your parade a little.

The chances of a Hurricane Pi forming on 3/14 is nill. The name list resets at 00Z on January 1st (7pm EST December 31st). For Pi to form on 3/14, we would have to have 36 named storms to form during the 73 days prior. That is a named storm every other day during the "deadest" months of the year. Matter of fact... the "average" number of named storms to form by March 14th... 0.02.

Ha... I know exactly what you mean, but you'd be surprised. I know some well-educated folks that believe Hurricane Andrew is a long-lived storm that continues to circumnavigate the globe and strikes Florida every year. Then again, there are congress-people that feel the hurricane names must change to reflect more "ethic" names and that the current list is "offensive."

In reality, I agree, it's all plain silly.

Perhaps if we get a climate change then that will happen. :)

Plus think of it this way...

If we have another Hurricane Andrew lets say in 20 years from now and it causes great damage.... How would you do back and say... Hurricane Andrew was retired twice. Hurricane Andrew the 2nd cause 20 billion dollars in damage... to me it would get too confusing.

Once they're retired... we should leave them that way. Besides... the names of those bad storms don't need to be heard ever again. I don't wanna ever live to hear a Hurricane Katrina in the GOM.

Well, the likelihood of them bringing back any retired names are very low. However, if they need to... it wouldn't be powerful storms like Andrew or Katrina.
