Did you say FEMA? How about this tidbit from today's AP wire:

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The government's disaster chief waited until hours after Hurricane Katrina had already struck the Gulf Coast before asking his boss to dispatch 1,000 Homeland Security employees to the region — and gave them two days to arrive, according to internal documents.

Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sought the approval from Homeland Security Secretary Mike Chertoff roughly five hours after Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29. Brown said that among duties of these employees was to "convey a positive image" about the government's response for victims."

One thing perhaps to keep in mind though.....the New Orleans NWS office is also responsible for all of the coastal counties in Mississippi.

You're right, I didn't think about that.

Don't you remember the people lining up outside the Superdome in heavy rain? Max's point was that the track was forecast to hit New Orleans as early as Friday, and nothing at all was done on Saturday by the Mayor of New Orleans or the Governor of LA. The NHC even issued a special hurricane watch for New Orleans on Saturday morning, and STILL they didn't begin their evacuation plan.

"[N]othing at all was done on Saturday by the Mayor of New Orleans or the Governor of LA."

HUH?? I'll agree they didn't do everything they ought to have done, but this kind of patent falsehood doesn't contribute to a reasoned consideration of what went wrong.
