Checking IN

#1 Postby timNms » Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:32 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know that my family and I in Seminary, MS are surviving in the aftermath of Katrina. We are still without electric power. I'm running this computer on a borrowed generator, thanks to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law from Chatanooga, TN. They drove down Saturday morning and got the generator and some groceries to my inlaws and us. We've had to wait in gas lines up to 5 hours for fuel. Now they are much shorter.
Our home sustained minor damage...we now have a waterbed and a skylite in our master bedroom, but it is nothing compared to what many residents in our area and along our coastline have been through. My brother, who lives in Jones County, MS lost many shingles from his home and had to rip out his carpeting and will have to replace interior walls due to water damage. But we all are thankfull for what we have!!
My mother, who is a hospice patient, is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. She has had lots of problems with her COPD. Her nurse FINALLY came to visit her yesterday. She was running very low on oxygen, but now has enough to last a few more days. We are sharing the generator with her so that she can take her breathing treatments. We're hoping to gain power tomorrow. We saw some crews driving up and down our road this afternoon and it appeared they were assessing the damage and trying to decided what to do. All of the local electric power associations in south MS were down. THis had never happened before.
There's so much I'd like to tell you, but I must cut this short as I don't want to damage my puter while on the generator.
I will close with this. I would like to ask for your prayers for my aunt. She is two houses down from me. Tuesday morning, her daughter brought a generator to her house for she and my uncle to use. He was on oxygen and had to take breathing treatments on a nebulizer. He also had a pacemaker. I was sleeping on my mom's front porch because of the heat. I was asked to help them keep the generator fueled and running. About 4 am I saw my aunt start her truck and she drove to my mom's. The first thing she told me was "I think Jim is dead". My heart sank! I drove her back to her house and checked him. I could find no pulse. I told her I'd go get an ambulance as we had no phone service (cell or otherwise). You must understand, our roadways were horrible. Trees were everwhere, but thankfully, the residents of our communities had made them passable in at least one lane. I got my mom to stay with her and drove to her son's. Then I made my way to the hospital and got the ambulance to follow me. I knew he was dead because he was cold and was becoming stiff, but I tried to rush nontheless. The paramedics declared him dead. We had to have a graveside service as there was no electric power at any of the funeral homes.
Please keep her and her family in your prayers!

Thanks guys. I do hope all my MS neighbors, those inland and who lived on the coast, are doing ok. We had phone service for the first time after the storm Sunday, but it was off yesterday. It's back on now, but I'm not sure how long that will last.

Thanks ladies and guys!
