What I think this means....

On the Pet Rescue forum at http://www.nola.com/forums/animals/inde ... itial=true. there was some discussion about what to do if their servers keep getting overloaded and they get shut out. Someone proposed that they meet on this thread if need be.

Memorial for the animals taht perished.

#105 Postby Houstonia » Thu Sep 08, 2005 12:42 pm

I've been thinking. I'm sure they are going to build some kind of memorial park for the victims of Katrina. It would be nice if there was a memorial dog park for the animal victims of Katrina. and I bet private funding could pay for it too.
It could have a little statue of a doggie and a kittie.

What do y'all think?

Rescuing pets

The Best Friends Hurricane Relief team is leaving two pet carriers at the top of all of the down/off ramps on Interstate 10 from the Canal Street exit east, according to a news release. They will check them every morning.

Anyone who finds an abandoned pet can put them in the carriers.

Best Friends Animal Society is working with animal control in Jefferson Parish to rescue the pets of New Orleans and take them to a safe haven at St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown, Miss., about 100 miles from New Orleans.

The first priority will be to reunite the pets with their families. In the cases where the family cannot be located, the pets will then be available for adoption.

Call (435) 689-0200 or (435) 644-3858 (office) or visit http://www.bestfriends.org.

Mattie that is great to hear! A very smart move because animals who are scared are often scared of anyone in uniform. Well at least dogs are, cats just hide. I hope more rescue groups do just such a thing.

plight of animals worsening daily - washington post

#109 Postby Houstonia » Thu Sep 08, 2005 2:00 pm

I am posting the link here, but I actually haven't read the article. I am to the point where I simply can't read any more about the abandoned animals, the abandoned elderly in the nursing homes who died, the babies who died in the Superdome, etc. I feel helpless and other than giving money to certain organizations, I realize my hands are tied. So, I'm basically hiding my head in the sand for a few days until I can handle it all.

Best Friends is an EXCELLENT organization! I've been donating to them for years. They are a "no-kill" sanctuary.

Houstonia - I know what you mean. The stories I really can't read are the ones about the animals. I've barely read through this thread, though my mind and heart are all for saving the abandoned pets. I'd be a basket case if I read them all!

I did see something in the paper today about a man from Louisiana that chartered a bus to go down and over a ride to anyone in NO that won't leave because of their pets. He got permission from the Governor (believe it or not!) and was allowed in to get people. I forget how many people he picked up - over 20 I think with dogs, cats, fish, etc. He had two banners on his bus that said something like "Pet Friendly Bus". This man didn't know any of these people, he just felt it was something that he had to do. Bless his heart! :D

I was happy to see two dogs and a cat rescued after 12 days, and they were pretty much OK. A CNN crew was out with one of the locals they hired as a guide, he went to his house and was able to save his animals, and they were taken by a shelter to care for them until their human could get relocated.

Bird people

#117 Postby themusk » Tue Sep 13, 2005 12:27 pm

If any of you have had the honor of being owned by a parrot or other bird, or otherwise know bird care, and are able to help out in Baton Rouge with the bird rescue efforts, the author Mattie Sue Athan has sent out this request for help (on a species-specific listserve I'm on, but she asks that it be forwarded):

Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 11:09:42 -0400
From: Mattie Sue Athan <msathan@AOL.COM>
Subject: HELP Call for Volunteers

Weather is nice, water is drinkable, there is power, but otherwise the bird rescue situation is awful down here, need people to feed babies, medicate sick and injured birds, go pick up birds, assemble cages, feed, clean, build. More than a hundred birds already here, more than a hundred coming in today, expect 400-500 by the weekend. Companion, breeder and baby birds being sent here from LSU Veterinary School and many local shelters which are overflowing with dogs.

Don't call, don't write, just come to Donna's house at 16365 Woodmere Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70819, my phone number 918-812-1099, but T-mobile towers are iffy here.

Please. Many hands and minds are needed. Liz Wilson, if you can get here, I'll help you with your transportation expense. If anybody can't come, but they have a friend who can, but can't afford the gas (it's $2.49/gal here, maybe a freeze on prices), give them money and put them into the car.

There are a dozen or so volunteers here. Everybody left to go pick up more birds. I'm supposed to medicate, haven't slept, having trouble understanding meds directions. It's far, far, worse than I imagined. I've got a fresh bottle of whiskey, but no coffee. I'm drinking water. What a nightmare.

Please forward message.

xoxox,

Mattie Sue

I'd go if I could (if Mattie Sue says it's bad, it's bad ), but I'd be more a burden on anyone than a help. Hopefully, one or more Storm2K readers can help.

My cats wish they lived in Sarasota! Everytime I take one in for shots it seems to be crawling with terrified dogs. I actually have 6 cats and 2 dogs and now I have 3 more cats and 2 more dogs that belong to my cousins until they get rehoused somewhere. I myself work as a petsitter and dogwalker. Not much money but my bosses cut me a lot of slack.

I wanted everyone to read this article. Now if they can just catch and house all the pets everyone has come through on food it seems.

BATON ROUGE, United States (AFP) - Since Hurricane Katrina smashed into the southern United States more than two weeks ago, accusations have flown back and forth about officials not doing enough for stricken Louisiana.

But with the outpouring of private donations after the catastrophe, one product more than any other has overwhelmed the relief effort: pet food.

"We've received a huge donation of food, equipment and supplies. I cannot handle and more," said Bob Otom from the US agriculture department.

"I've got every warehouse I know chock-a-block full and I can't handle any more food supplies for pets," he told journalists in Baton Rouge.

His colleague Joel Goldman echoed the frustration: "The recovery operation has received a large quantity of food -- dog food, cat food... and we are actually overflowing."

"When we are overloaded with food and material donations it takes away from our ability to rescue animals," he said, urging concerned animal lovers to donate money instead.
