Long Beach orders

#1 Postby cancunkid » Wed Sep 07, 2005 11:26 pm

I just talked to my cousin she says she and her sister went to her fathers house today to start packing some things up when they were told by National Guards that the area south of the railroad would be closed at 6 pm tomorrow Thursday the 8th for at least 6 months! My cousins are in a panic since they don't have boxes to pack in and everything is covered in mud. They are trying to pack up some family pictures to have them restored and some treasures in the house but say there was no warning of such orders. Has anyone heard such a thing? the house is safe and standing just totally junked with mud and sand and has several holes in the walls and roof not unsound just unlivable. It is said that until all the sewer and water and other utilities are returned to the area and clean up completed (tear down?) they will not be allowed back. Yet I read that several of the casinos plan to be up and running within months. This family lost at least 6 households and this house was one of only 2 still standing other than one in NO. Seems unfair to give such a short amount of time when everyone is still housing extra people and there is no room to store anything :(

Frequently asked questions

QUESTION: How do I purify water?

ANSWER: Boil water at a rolling boil for 10 minutes. A pinch of salt added to each quart of water improves taste. You can also purify water with two chemicals: chlorine bleach and iodine.

Chlorine bleach (unscented) such as Clorox or Purex. Check the label to be sure that hypochlorite is the only active ingredient. Do not use bleach that contains soap. Use the following amounts:

-- 1 percent chlorine -- Add 40 drops of bleach/ gallon of water

-- 4 to 6 percent chlorine -- Add 8 drops of bleach/gallon of water

-- 7 to 10 percent chlorine -- Add 4 drops of bleach /gallon of water

Mix bleach into the water and let stand for 30 minutes. Water should have a slight chlorine odor. If it doesn't, repeat the process and let the water stand for an additional 15 minutes.

Iodine. Iodine from your medicine chest can also be used to purify water. The iodine should be 2/United States Pharmocopeia (U.S.A.) Strength. Add 20 drops/gallon of clear water, and 40 drops/gallon of cloudy water.

Water purification tablets are available at drugstores. Follow manufacturer's directions.

Q: Is canned food safe to eat after a flood or storm?

A: Discard metal cans if waters contain chemical waste. Otherwise, examine cans and destroy ones that are swollen, leaking, dented on the seams, or badly dented anywhere. If the can is rusty, wipe off the rust if you can and disinfect the cans by the following methods:

-- Remove and throw away labels (keep track of what is in the cans)

-- Wash cans in hot, soapy water.

-- Rinse cans in chlorine disinfecting solution (2 cup household bleach/dishpan of warm water.

-- Rinse in clear water.

-- Let cans air dry.

-- Relabel cans.

-- Use as soon as possible.

Thank you to both of you. I think that what my Mother said they told her got the added rumor extras and probably what they are hearing MS are the things that are going on in LA. I see nothing about them not allowing people in besides it made no sense because the casinos say they are going to reopen in 3 months.

Thank you again!
