I don't want to be too premature here because the waters are far from completly receded in New Orleans, but this info just cross from the Associated Press...
AP News Alert
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Authorities say a sweep of the city has found far fewer bodies than expected, suggesting that the death toll may not be catastrophic 10,000 feared.
Let's hope this situation doesn't change once the waters do recede completely.

still concerned about the 9th ward, since it flooded directly due to the tidal surge, not just a levee break from tidal surge pressure
still, we are at 111 in Louisiana, 201 in Mississippi, 11 in Florida, as well as 2 in Alabama and Georgia for a confirmed death toll so far of 327, which is still inexcusable for this country today, and that number is likely to rise

Well my understanding is the waters rose up a certain pace - not like it was
a wall of water crashing down on people. So it makes sense that most would
have to be either infirm, elderly, or a child to die in that circumstance.
Also non swimmers I guess ! Note that I'm only talking about NOLA here.
Its a different story for the guys on the coast whose houses
were blown apart and / or swept away by the surge.
