Should I get gas for the generator?

Just to be safe I suggested that I should fill the generator cans. Wife says no because the gas will just sit there for a year. Of course this am they downgraded Ophelia to a TS and she said there was no reason. Locals and tourists haven't made any moves to the store, etc. Just seems everything is status quo. The winds here are quite brisk (25 to 30 kts) but I know they are more from convergence between Ophelia and the high pressure. As the winds die down from the gradient most will assume that she has passed or avoided us and breathe a sigh of relief. One thing that bothers me and I know it is just superstition. But in the past 10 years every hurricane that was predicted to hit SC has hit NC instead. Plus it will cost around 20 dollars to fill each five gallon can (another thing I though would never happen).

I went ahead and filled mine, the way i see it if the generator doesn't need it the truck and car definitely will use it at some point.

I was just on the phone with Pebbles talking about this. They inch their way up the coast to us. This one has me a little on edge so my gas cans are getting filled... if I don't use them for the generator, I can always put it in the car later on.

I'll probably fill a couple up tomorrow and if it starts looking like O will make her way here, I may fill a couple more on Monday morning.

I can always use it for the mower and in the cars.

having been thru 3 - get it - better safe than sorry - and even though the wife (which I am one) says not to - remember that IF you lose power she will then say ~why did you listen to me?!?~

If you're going to get gas, you better do it soon. A couple of smaller stations have already sold out on the lower octane, (or so they say anyways). You can tell the people here are starting to pay some attention to the storm. Grocery stores and gas stations are packed. It' kind of funny how I use to be one of the people that waitied till the end before I did something, but Fran, Bertha and Floyd changed my way of thinking. Get the gas now and put it in you car if you don't use it. It'll be worth the trouble now rather than later.

I filled up my cans just before the storm hit in the gulf (only paid $2.69 a gallon, a bargin today). I probably will not need it, but I am still mowing the lawns, and whatever is left over when the grass stops growing can go into the truck.

I was at Walmart this morning (in Morehead City, NC) and it was not too busy for a Saturday morning. I did pick up some extra water, just in case (we will drink it anyway, and I was there anyway) and there were signs up that said "We appologize for any shortage of water, but it has been diverted to the Gulf Coast to help with the hurricane releif efforts. There was plenty there, but if the NWS does move the track North, and people start to worry, they will be sold out quickly.

Up in our area, I have not seen any shortage of gas for a week or so now. The prices even have started to come down ($2.93 at my local station, down from $3.19 the other day, and I filled up in Morehead the other day for "only" $2.80).

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get prepared. The forecast points and track keeps changing and now it's point right at NC.

I would plan and get more than you usually get for that generator... alot of our electric companies have sent many down to help those poor people in Mississippi. May take longer than usual to get things up and running again after.

I don't know how many cans you're talking about, but if it's not too many I would fill them.

If you don't need the generator by November 1st, start putting it into your vehicles. I would think that you would be able use it up by Thanksgiving.
