Hurricane watch possibly as far north as Va/Nc border

#1 Postby hurricanedude » Sat Sep 10, 2005 4:29 pm

looking at the latest model runs, and reading the latest public advisory on Opelia, I expect a Watch to be issued further north to the VA/NC border...possibly as far north as Smith Point, Virginia in the Lower Chesapeake Bay!

I agree about it being as far north as the NC, VA according to some of the models, but the NHC is going to wait to see how the models will shift.

Yeah I think we'll see a shift to the VA/NC border for the hurricane watch...just not sure if it will be tonight or tomorrow morning.

If the track does change to the north that would mean a little longer over water. My read on the models is the core of the cane wouldn't reach the NC coast until late Tuesday at the earliest...and maybe as late as during the day Wednesday.(depending on what part of the NC coast gets the landfall) If that is the case then they *could* wait until late Sunday to issue any watches further north. We'll see...my guess is no later than 5AM Sunday the watch will be moved north to either the border or to Oregon Inlet.

I agree. Watches may very well soon be posted northward to the North Carolina/Virginia border. First, however, the Outer Banks will very likely be under the watch before it is extended further north to the border of Virginia and North Carolina.

The Outer Banks are starting to look potentially more vulnerable to Ophelia...

^The Outer Banks extend all the way to the VA border.

North of Cape Hatteras they use three cut-off points. Oregon Inlet(seperating the northern OBX from Hatteras Island), Currituck Beach Light(only 10 miles from the VA/NC border), or the VA/NC border.

Given the opportunity for Ophelia to move up the ERN seaboard I would assume they will go all the way to the border on the first shot.
