Here on Culebra, as in many places, we have a football pool for the season that started this week. Ann came up with what I think is an excellent, low key, easy idea for donations.
Each week it's usually 6 bucks to play. This year they added a buck to the pool (with an explanatory attached note). Each extra dollar will go into a holding fund for a Katrina directed charity. The charities will be listed, everyone who plays gets to vote on the particular charity, the one with the most votes wins and at the end of the season the money and any interest it has gained, will be sent to that charity.
Now..that may not seem like a lot, and in our case, it won't BE a lot (1300 pop and about 25 play the pool) but, something is better than nothing and people who want to do something else are already doing it (some incredible PR people stories coming out of LA and MS). But it's better than nothing, just about painless and one thing I like is that...like most disasters or personal horrors, in a few months most have forgotten and moved on to other things and we'll be sitting on a nice bit of cash to send somewhere.
It seems like this could be done all over America and no doubt there are lots of you involved in football pools. Pass the idea around and see what can happen.

That is a great idea and I think it would be a perfect idea for the sports here to collect money. My daughter pays soccer. We have over 500 players here in my town. That is just little league. Then you have high school football. What if a dollar was added to the fee to get in and that extra dollar goes to an area that is hit hard by the hurricane.
