WASHINGTON
Federal Emergency Management Agency director Mike Brown said Monday he has resigned "in the best interest of the agency and best interest of the president," three days after losing his onsite command of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Re: alicia-w's post
What have you observed to make that kind of a statement?
Frank
P.S. The man in charge of FEMA operations for Hurricane Katrina would probably be a good choice, considering his Coast Guard background, since they are some of the best in coordinating emergency operations.
FEMA hasnt done too much to impress me. After 7 years of living in Florida, it's my observation that they're a pretty mediocre bunch. Not a very efficient operation.

I know several folks here in the NW Florida area who have yet to receive their checks from hurricane Ivan. One who did is now being asked to repay it and she doesnt know why. some of the local governments here still have not received millions of dollars in FEMA payments due from hurricane Ivan. I could go on and on,but those are the highlights.

Saint Lucie County has not been repaid by FEMA for Frances and Jeanne yet either and now they probably wont be

Here's a pretty comprehensive collection of FEMA anecdotes. Not all of them are FEMA's problems. Some are about the fraudulent claims filed with them.

Apparently FEMA has promised the City of Houston reimbursements for Katrina expenses, but our Mayor pointed out the other day FEMA still owes the city a few million from Allison, over 4 years ago. Go figure.
I must be blind; I don't get the Texas joke. I've lived in both Florida and Texas and people are generally friendly in both states. I am very proud of the way our state has helped the last 2 weeks.
