I'm here, in Havelock today, I saw a Major Debris Field (MDF for short)waiting to happen, there is one house that is being built right now that has left over lumber all over the yard, would look real pretty in someones front door or window
Then in pretty much everyones yard there were junk or other stuff that could become airborne easily... I hope Ophelia doesnt take advantage of this huge MDF...

Complacency
Folks I've talked to seem to be completely complacent, expecting a 'little wind and rain' is all.
Complacency is never a good idea when there's an unpredictable storm sitting that close off the coast. Having said that, I'll admit I haven't made the first preparation. Hope we don't all pay the price.

Well, I'm here and have been watching, but to be perfectly honest, there hasn't been much to get very excited about with ole' Ophelia. I keep wondering if their little "cone of doom" is going to change. Since SC isn't in it, I don't think anyone here on this side of the border is paying much attention. I just picked up the kiddos from school, and they have canceled school tomorrow for Horry county. Just waiting and watching.

Present!
Ophelia is a very strange storm. First she strengthens, and then she weakens. Really I don't know what to expect from her. The NWS says 85 mph wind gusts on Wednesday. And now it’s looking likely that the eye may pass over me. Oh well, right now it’s only a matter of waiting and watching. By the way, I should tell you that I am located in Jacksonville.
And his is my forecast, lets see if it verifies:
Tropical Storm Warning in effect...
Hurricane Watch in effect...
Today
Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Windy with highs in the lower 80s. Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph.
Tonight
Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers. Windy with lows around 70. Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph.
Tuesday
Mostly cloudy with showers likely. Windy with highs in the lower 80s. East winds 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. Chance of rain 60 percent.
Tuesday Night
Showers. Strong winds with lows in the middle 70s. East winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.
Wednesday
Showers. Strong winds with highs in the lower 80s. Northeast winds 50 to 60 mph with gusts up to 85 mph.

emerald isle report
the wind today is not as strong as yesterday--I heard on the radio they are opening shelters at 5 p.m. in Onslow County(that is Jacksonville, Swansboro and North Topsail area)--no word on down east Carteret County--There seems to a lot of wait and see at the beach today--if it does hit the gulf stream and goes to a cat 2--it could be a problem

Hey, I just watched MB police Station putting up their Hurricane Shutters.
Where I live, they had just planted a bunch of new trees. So far, with just the gusts, has bent over 3 of them. The landscape company is now trying to put in new ones. I don't know where you are in MB, but went to Walmart and these people seem to be getting a bit freaky now. 501 is bustling, with the tourists running and the blvd was pretty dead with places closing and shoring up for the winds. Finally saw a few sprinkles of rain.... and then it stopped. Time will tell.....

Carteret County update
Carteret County is expecting gale force or higher winds for more than 24 hours and has issued a voluntary evacuation for residents and a mandatory evac for non-residents. Beaufort Middle School and Newport Middle School will be opened as Red Cross Shelters. Atlantic School will be open as a community shelter.
Also, schools are closed for tomorrow (Tues)

I have a question for those who know the Myrtle beach area.
If we are expecting tropical force winds, and they are evacuating from the beach to 17, how far inland can these winds have an effect......I mean not a little blowing but possible damage and such?? I noticed that they are using the Conway and Loris locations for shelters and not Carolina Forest ect as they did last year. Basically how far inland would be safe?

Yeah, my husband just came home from work (he works for the city) and he said the p.d. had boarded up. He thought it was a bit strange, but whatever. Actually, I live between North Myrtle Beach and Little River, but for some reason when I typed in my location, the N didn't come up and I just never fixed it. As far as your question as to how far inland is safe, the schools they are using as shelters, are inland pretty far and quite safe.

I dont know, I think we're going to get the same here weatherwise, I live in Craven, I'm wondering about that here, as they normally use Havelock High as a shelter, but I havent heard anything one way or the other... also, we have a phone number that we can call...
