The numbers reported are only the dead which have been positively identified. The number of bodies found is MUCH, MUCH higher. Three days after the storm, "rescue workers" were quoted as saying they had been doing nothing but pulling bodies from rubble and waterways - estimating they had ALREADY found over 1,000 bodies in Harrison County alone. A woman I work with visited the remains of her home north of Waveland a block from a cordoned area. She said refrigerated morgue trucks were going in and out for days.

I just heard on the radio that LA is up to near 470, MS near 219, and Florida 7.
Also.....the nursing home that had 34 people in it die (all elderly) has sparked some action. According to the LA State Attorney General, there were 2 workers who abandoned these 34 people in order to save themselves. Now these 2 workers will be charged with 34 counts of homicide.

here is the one for the Deadliest Atlantic Hurricanes (It has not been updated since 1996, so Mitch and Jeanne are not on the list)

I wonder how many will go as a direct death from Katrina. Most of the Louisiana deaths are not directly from Katrina, but rather indirectly from her because of the levee breach. Granted, the news media will look at the total number, but when it comes to the record books, only the direct Katrina deaths will be counted, which will be much lower on the above list.

From what I've seen there were...
4 direct deaths in Florida,
2 in Georgia,
1 in Kentucky,
252 in Louisiana,
26 in Mississippi.
So far... 285 total.
