New Death Toll Surpasses 650

#1 Postby recmod » Tue Sep 13, 2005 5:40 pm

News reports now have the official death toll from Katrina at 659 as follows:

Quote from MSNBC:
The charges came hours after Louisiana's Health Department announced that the state death toll climbed to 423 Tuesday from 279 the day before.

Details on where the dead were found were not immediately released. The announcement brings to 659 the number of Katrina-related deaths reported by officials in five states: In addition to the 423 in Louisiana, 218 in Mississippi, 14 in Florida and two each in Alabama and Georgia

This now makes Katrina the third deadliest hurricane since 1900...behind the Galveston disaster and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. The news will only continue to worsen as the recovery effort reaches the really badly flooded-out areas that have still yet to be searched...
