Granted, the news media will look at the total number, but when it comes to the record books, only the direct Katrina deaths will be counted, which will be much lower on the above list.

From what I've seen there were...

4 direct deaths in Florida,
2 in Georgia,
1 in Kentucky,
252 in Louisiana,
26 in Mississippi.

So far... 285 total.

Almost 200 indirect deaths in MS? seems high

I agree... I'm kinda scratching my head right now. I figured the most direct deaths would come from Mississippi rather than Louisiana. I think that Mississippi number is definately in error, or old.

those that died from the flooding due to the levee break are direct deaths, since the levee break was directly caused by the hurricane, so the louisiana number is accurate

Yeah... I was just reading some papers on that subject. I was mistaken. They would be considered direct deaths...

Three days after the storm, "rescue workers" were quoted as saying they had been doing nothing but pulling bodies from rubble and waterways - estimating they had ALREADY found over 1,000 bodies in Harrison County alone. A woman I work with visited the remains of her home north of Waveland a block from a cordoned area. She said refrigerated morgue trucks were going in and out for days.

I have heard the same thing myself from friends and relatives working both BFD and GFD.Many reefer trucks and not enough corners.
