My folks and I stayed one time at the Oceanana Resort there in Atlantic Beach back in the early '90s...while there...early one morning my Dad and I did some fishing from that same pier that has had it's end destroyed.

sigh... been hearing that some homes have been flooded pretty bad, major damage and trees falling on some. Only morning is gonna tell the whole story.

ncbird skip waters said some places on the east facing parts of pamlico county are seeing a 10 foot surge right now hope nobody stayed to close to the water!

It is my understanding that the "Sheraton Pier" all or some part was now in the big pond. Do not know how the other three piers in Atlantic Beach are doing.

I was briefly watching TWC and bouncing around from channel to channel. They showed the end of the Atlantic Beach pier collapse. About 3/4 hour, I wandered back there in time to see the rest of the pier disappear in the Atl.

I hope that's the worse of the damage but somehow I don't think that will be all. My concern is that all of our resources are in N.O. and NC may be neglected since it will be considered minor (in comparison, of course).

NC has already taken care of the relief as NG and relief is already staged just outside the worst hit areas and we had help from our neighbors in bringing in utility trucks to go in and restore power.They had activated all the needed agencies locally that needed to be and now they are just waiting to get in there to help.

I was just going to put an addendum on my previous post. MSNBC just reported that 250 FEMA workers are already on the ground in NC and the relief effort is being led by the Coast Guard.

The damage in NC is Very minor compared to Katrina's which looks like a nuclear wasteland

I'm sure a destroyed home is just as destroyed whether it be at the hands of a Cat 5 or Cat 1.

It only takes one house (yours) to be a disaster to you.
