The worst storm we have experienced in our area, Hurricane Frederic made Landfall. Since all longtime residents in this area have compared every storm to him and we have yet to have one hit us with the same ferocity. Thank God

but remember it very well. I remember all the kids in our apartment complex watching our tv that was hooked to the car battery!
I remember the beautiful, calm, day before....hard to forget these things......

Dauphin Island remembers that storm well...but I'm afraid that Hurricane Katrina is going to go down as worse than Freddie on the West End of the Island...on the last 13 streets on the gulf side (approx 78 lots), there are only 4 houses remaining. My house was built during the summer of 79 (good omen, huh), and survived Freddie with only minor damage...this time it was smashed...a house down the street built in '68 is GONE. The East End fared far better than in Freddie, although there was a lot of flood damage to homes that were not flooded in 1979. Also, I don't have much info about Bayou La Batre and Coden (southern Mobile County-mainland) from '79, but I know the area has been absolutely decimated by Katrina...
I agree that Mobile proper will not think about Katrina as a "big one," but I'm not so sure about southern Mobile County.
After Frederic, a sign was posted at Seafood Galley Restaurant on the Island, which read, "Historical Marker: On this spot on May 17, 1789, nothing happened, absolutely nothing. On September 12, 1979, all hell broke loose." Seafood Galley Restaurant was almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina
