Katrina Most Destructive Ever (AP)

#1 Postby jasons2k » Thu Sep 15, 2005 3:11 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — This will come as little surprise to hundreds of thousands of people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has concluded that the storm was the most destructive ever to strike the United States.

Katrina's top winds were not as powerful as those of Hurricane Camille, which struck in 1969. And its lowest air pressure was not as low as that of 1988's Hurricane Gilbert. But Katrina was far larger. Hurricane-force winds extended 120 miles from the center. Estimates of the economic damage to the Gulf coast region range as high as $125 billion.

I didn't think we'd see a storm as destructive as Andrew for a long time and this one is 3+ times Andrew! Its scary... now we'll probably think that we won't see a storm as destructive as Katrina for decades or maybe ever... but we never know. Anything can happen.

Hmm. Originally, we were only putting her in the top five of all time. But now, after reading this, do you think it's possible that we could call her the GOAT (Greatest of All Time)? Tough to say. That'll be debated for a while.

Scroll thru those and you'll probably find what you're looking for.

I also have some other images on the main site, some amazing "after" hi res sat pics, and an amazing before/after pic of one of the floating casinos in Gulfport.

I saw those when you first posted it wxmann but didn't comment. Nice collections, thanks for posting. Just find myself looking at her and shaking my head, darn near perfect looking storm at times. Sends chills down my spine. Do not want to ever be staring down one like that coming this way.

After watching the Prez speak tonight, and the comments afterwards, I wouldn't be surprised if its closer to $200 Billion when its all said and done. One of the panelists (sorry, not sure who he was) on CNN mentioned he thought it would end up costing more than the Iraq war.

thats only the insured damage

The 2 to 1 ratio may not apply due to the severe tidal flooding. A 3:1 ratio, as was applied during Hurricane Floyd, may have to be applied, which would place the damage at at least 180 billion, which seems reasonable based upon the destruction of NO, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, including Mobile, plus the billions in damage for Miami

Also you can look at the multi-day GOES loop, which shows her bombing in the GOM. It takes about 1/2 minute to load, but well worth it.
