One lesson that Katrina showed everyone is that our major cities on the coast are very unprepared for a major hurricane, just from a wind aspect
Winds in New Orleans from Katrina were only category 2 intensity, yet, those winds easily damaged or destroyed many high rises. Category 3 or 4 winds will only be worse, which leaves me quite concerned about the Miami area, since we have many high rises, right along the coast, the same is true for NYC. Houston is a bit better located since it is inland a little
I hope that the major coastal metro areas take notice and do something to mitigate against the catastrophic wind damage that is bound to occur when major hurricane conditions come into one of these areas
Important Lesson of Katrina

Houston learned a lesson when Alicia blew thru. Highrises using glass that's supposed to stand up to hurricane winds still had busted windows from flying debris - mostly from the gravel on top of nearby rooftops. I know I read that they don't let anyone use gravel anymore- but can't refind that article.
