according to NOLA.com, the officials are not giving any new death toll figures until sunday afternoon. They a re now reaching the really bad areas of the Lower 9th Ward and "dozens of bodies are being found everywhere, with multiple deaths in individual households."

I bet when they issue the new total tomorrow, we will see an official number at or over 1,000

Remember, they originally thought the toll would exceed 10-25K.

Be thankful that it was NOT higher. :larrow:

concerning the number of missing:

according to this: http://www.redcross.org/news/ds/hurrica ... facts.html

201,000 people have registered on the familiy links redcross homepage to either search for their loved ones or to inform they that one is ok.

also on the nola.com missing forum there are 26,780 entries.

sure, you can't equal these numbers to the number of missing because posts get repeated etc.

but the numbers are huge and my estimate is that there are currently at least 25,000-75,000 missing persons.

Reuters Sunday AM Update

#147 Postby recmod » Sun Sep 18, 2005 8:11 am

This is the latest report from Reuters issued on Sunday morning:

The receding waters allowed search and rescue teams their first look into many homes that had been submerged for nearly three weeks and were said to reveal a growing Katrina death toll.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported the teams were turning up large numbers of bodies in districts such as the 9th Ward, Gentilly and the Desire-Florida, which quickly filled with up to 12 feet of water after Katrina broke a nearby levee.

"Parts of the city have become a target-rich environment for human remains," said Federal Emergency Management Agency rescue squad liaison Charles Hood. "It's becoming a very difficult task."

FEMA Urban Search and Rescue spokesman Louie Fernandez said he had not heard of a dramatic increase in the number of dead.

As of Friday, Katrina's death toll stood at 816, with 579 of those in Louisiana, 218 in Mississippi and a total of 19 in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. Louisiana officials said they would not update their numbers until Sunday.

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet but the official death toll hit 973 today, more than 700 from LA.

This needs to be blared to the people in Texas so that they will evacuate from Rita, which looks to be another monster storm.

new numbers per CNN.com - Louisiana's death toll stood Wednesday at 896. Katrina has claimed a total of 1,130 lives in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia -- making it the third deadliest storm in U.S. history.

A Category 4 storm killed an estimated 8,000 people in Galveston, Texas, in 1900. Another storm killed 1,836 people in South Florida 28 years later.
