Gender of Greek storms

#1 Postby 100feettstormsurge » Sat Sep 17, 2005 3:35 pm

If the Atlantic gets to Alpha, will it be male, female, both, neither, or an alien? I can just imagine the media having loads of fun with the Greek list.

Alien, of course!

Or they could just say Greek, that would be most simple.

I know there is a very popular hot girl singer from Australia, Delta Goodrem, she is a girl, and thats DELTA... so maybe ALPHA would be a boy, BETA would be a girl, GAMMA is a boy (though it sounds like a girl).

Funny, Gamma always struck me as more of a masculine name, lol.

I don't personally know an Alpha, but chances are there are people out there with that name. Not sure about Mu, Nu, or Pi though.

I know someone named Pi. The 3.14th man I ever met was named Pi.

EDIT: typo

The dominant male in a wolf (and dog) pack is indeed referred to as the Alpha male. Of course, we have to get there first-of the two NHC Basins only EPAC has come close having hit the Z storm twice.

I'd say male for Alpha and Omega. All the letters inbetween, I've no idea. :D

The lead male is the alpha male and the lead female is the alpha female.

The gender of Hurricane Alpha would be "it". "Alpha struck coastal Marksville pretty hard, and then it went inland to cause 900,000 power outages in the Beadsville area." might be a sample usage.

of course since the names alternate between male and female, and Wilma is a female then I guess we could assume that Alpha would be male....

The greek names are either androgynous or "it" as some have said above.

Gender changes from year to year

#19 Postby jimvb » Sat Sep 17, 2005 8:39 pm

If Wal-Mart, sorry, I mean Wilma, is female, then Alpha should be male. That's good this year. But next year, the W storm is William, so Alpha should then be female. So Greek storms change gender every year.
