All I know is that I topped off the tank last night on the way home from work and emailed all my local friends to do the same. If the storm gets big and the track shifts north, gas won't be cheap.
Here's a map of oil platforms and refineries:

I think that might not be true. Crude oil prices have actually plunged since Katrina, not risen.

Where do you think Jim Cantore's going to set up shop?

Well, duh. They went up because of Katrina's disruption. Then they went down when the disruption ended. Another disruption = up again. Gas futures, which are only partly tied to the price of oil, also went up, and haven't come all the way back down again yet. Guess what another major in the Gulf will do?

Probably Key West... maybe farther north if things keep shifting north as they seem to be doing.
I don't know if he would go to Key West if this explodes into a Cat 2 or worse though, the Keys is a death trap.

I know...Rita would finish what Katrina started...the complete destruction of SELA

I guess it is possible but I doubt Rita becomes a major cane in the GOM. Rita has an outside chance in the western GOM since the water is warmer there. It does not appear that the upper level environment will be a condusive for development as existed during Katrina. My current concern is the apparent relocation of the center this evening to the North. This will certainly force a track shift north. South Florida is at cosiderable risk this evening for a potential hurricane on Tuesday. After that, I'd conjecture to say that La to Tx is next.......MGC

I hope this doesn't sound heartless but I would much rather this hit LA which is already damaged and people evacuated than to cause more massive damage in TX where the evacuees are. I can't imagine how those children would react if they had to be evacuated somewhere else. Where in the world would they all evacuate to?

There are people in areas on the western outskirts of NOLA (like me) who have returned home and have damage but are much better off than people to our east who have no homes and can't return to what's left for a long time.
If this storm comes close where would we go? All the hotel rooms are booked.
I do agree though about Texas, there are many evacuees there...basically no place for Rita is a good place.
