Well call me a liberal but I feel it would be devastating to the oil platforms and refineries and the gas prices would soar IF it takes a Katrinaesque path however, what is my concern is the lives at stake. Many people would not be able to leave the Biloxi, Gulfport, Waveland, Bay St Louis and Slidell, LA areas. At least New Orleans is evacuated but I can tell you along the MS Gulf Coast if Rita comes this way it will be devastation beyond compare and a great loss of life. We have people in tents in their yards, the shelters are still full. People living in pop up campers, many people who have lost their form of transportation out of here. Many would just give up and say WTF... I don't have anything else left to lose. You are worried about $3.00 gas prices? At least you still have a home with a stable roof to live in (80%+ homes here have roof damage to some degree)... At least you all have your jobs to be able to afford the gas.. AND just MAYBE you could car pool... Shame on you posters for sounding so selfish when others in your country are suffering miserably. I'm broke, have more then moderate damage to my home, I havent seen a penny out of FEMA, My insurance company or the Red Cross and I can think of much more terrible things then an increase of gasoline prices!

Radar - we in FL had this type of thing last year with the 3 storms that hit seemingly right in a row. I can't speak for everyone else, but only for myself. Yes, I'm concerned about the people with damage along the Gulf Coast. However, my thinking is that Rita will not be hitting there so there shouldn't be an impact in that regard. She will, most likely, be in the Gulf however, thereby affecting shipping, the ships that are bringing supplies to the Gulf Coast, and the oil rigs that are just trying to get up and running again. Getting those rigs up and going again is just as important for folks in your area as it is for the rest of us, if I'm not mistaken, because that's jobs and money for these people. I don't believe that thinking ahead of the consequences (i.e., higher gas) is being selfish. If it is, then you know what, I AM being selfish right now when I'm in the 3-day cone of a storm that can be a Cat. 1 or 2 storm when it comes through. I feel for y'all over there, I really do, but we're still picking up debris, there's rough damage here, etc. and another on the way. It's not a pretty picture anywhere, but please do not be rude to those of us who have donated money to help you out over there. As for the lack of response from FEMA, you need to get on them about that. I'm sorry for what you've gone through, but there are other concerns for those of us who aren't on the Gulf Coast.

Canel,
I do not want to sound rude to anyone. I know what is going on Florida now and what has gone on in Florida in the past and I completely understand that and have donated to the Red Cross during times of catastrophe in Florida. I just don't think people realize the whole picture of what is going on here. True national media has focused on New Orleans but in other places beside New Orleans there is a great amount of suffering also (including in Florida). People are saying "oh I dont want to pay $3.00 a gallon for gas).. I dont want to pay that much either but it if comes to that I WILL. I pay that much for a gallon of milk and I pay way more then that for a few ounces of perfume. But the bigger picture is the human suffering and the lives that will very well be lost. And then those posters who are saying "If Rita heads the same way as Katrina we will have drink named the Katrinarita"... I feel that is more rude as I don't believe this is a joking matter. Maybe the mental exhaustion has taken over and I'm on edge but I feel as though posters on this board are more worried about the economic impact then the lives that could be at stake wherever Katrina makes landfall (and she will make landfall).... Stay safe canel my thoughts are with you!!

It's ok radar. I understand that you have to be stressed mentally and physically at this point. I'm one of those who make jokes because I like to lighten the mood a little. It's one of the things I like about this board honestly
I think we're all a little mentally stressed by the images we've seen coming from MS, AL, and LA - I know I am. I have to joke about stuff just to get through it at times, ya know
Anyway, stay safe up there, and get some rest. (By the way, it's Rita making landfall soon

LOL Canel,
I must really be stressed I can't even name the right storm... It is just the amount of human suffering I have had to deal with as I work in an Emergency room. This is my first weekend off and I just can't seem to relax. I guess if I lived somewhere else I too may be concerned with gas prices, just right now it is not much of a concern for me. Good luck with Rita I hope she is more hype then hurricane.

The potential, however slight it is, is that $3.00 would be a gift, if there is enough gas to begin with. In the past few months, the supply of oil has not been the problem, it is the refining capacity. Now with the production and thus supply in the GOM damaged and refining slammed in LA area, a TX hit would be ......... well...... can't go there.
You know what the problem with the GOM is? There is no good place to wish the dang thing to go!

I cannot believe the attitude on this thread--people are worried about the ECONOMIC consequences of the price of oil, and the impact on oil rigs. What about the HUMAN consequences? Hopefully, Rita won't develop into a major cane, but given the warmth of the Gulf, it is possible that it will. Are we so callous that we are more worried about the cost of a gallon of gas than the fact that another community may be smashed, and the impact this will have upon the lives of the people there? Trust me, after going through multiple huriricanes in the past, the most important thing about which to worry is a) family b) friends, and c) neighbors.
Let's get our priorities straight, folks.

Katrinarita
Cut lime
Salt
2 ounces tequila
1/2 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
2 more ounces tequila
another 1/2 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 1/2 tablespoon lime juice
5 or 6 ice cubes
Rub the rim of an extra-large cocktail glass with lime, then dip in salt to frost. Place 5 drops of tabasco (with eyedropper) intermittantly around the rim. Combine remaining ingredients in a mixing glass and stir well. Strain into the prepared cocktail glass.
Enjoy!

you need a drink that requires no ice for a cane like straight vodka or red wine.
