Wouldn't put too much stock in woodpecker behavior. Not too smart.
I Used to work in hollywood fl and a small woodpecker pecked his way to trouble up on a power pole....BOOM!!! Took out power to the entire warehouse district for 5 hours!! Crispy bird was layin at the base of the pole.

BTW...on domestic animals...my dogs are acting normal.

Props to THREAD on that post....LMAO on the cats boarding up the litter box!! HAHAH!!

The fish have not been active today like they were before Katrina moved through the state. They also were not active before Ophelia appeared. This could change and I will post something if they do late tommorow. With the lack of activity I think it is safe to say CFL wont see anything in the next 36 hrs.

Only two out of three mosquitoes bit me this afternoon. There must be a hurricane related reason for this.

Even in Houston, when Katrina hit, it was completely quiet. I usually throw food out to the birds, but for four days, nothing ate it--I've never seen that happen before. Right now, they're twittering away here happily, so at least we know they don't have a five or six-day-away instinct :)--perhaps..

An observation from Jupiter:
I'm a believer, but to test this theory further, I filled my empty birdfeeder around 4 o'clock. On any other day, within 10 minutes the blue jays would be fighting the doves for dominance, with the cardinals sneaking in and out to eat. I've checked several times and even watched as I ate supper (usually the hour before sunset is most active). Not one bird came for supper.

Maybe they know something we don't. Jupiter shouldn't have many effects from Rita, I don't think.

Plenty of birds in my yard this morning, and plenty of lazy hounds in the house...however, one of the dogs is following me anxiously from room to room...which is his standard mode when heavy weather is threatening.

A few weeks ago, I asked the vet for a tranquilizer for him...he weighs 80 pounds and tries to jump in my lap when there is thunder (which would be fine, except he tries to find my lap when I'm standing up). So much for better living through chemistry...he really got wound up and freaked out.

I will be providing strong restraints for all 3 dogs if we are going to get Cat 1 or higher here in South Dade County (miami). So many pets were lost in Andrew when the structures failed...there was nothing to contain them...they ran off, and never found their way home again. Very sad.

From Jupiter again:
Birds showed up this morning...hungry. Also plenty of insect activity, bees and butterflies all around.
Looks like all is fine here, even though the tropical storm watch has been extended through Palm Beach County. We could use some rain here.

Birds can get caught up in the storms. We had a flamingo in our school yard in New Hampshire after the remnants of a tropical storm blew through back in the early 80's.

Updated at 11 AM. Local news channel. I think it was actually a TS warning from Jupiter Inlet southward.
I'm sure it just precautionary, because there's a lot of convection on the north side of the storm.
Noon news coming on now.
