Now THIS is real preparedness.....

#1 Postby dixiebreeze » Mon Sep 19, 2005 11:34 am

Excerpt from AP update:

The state was sending a National Guard cargo plane to evacuate 22 patients from Key West's hospital to Sebring, near Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Several critically ill patients already had been evacuated to hospitals in Miami.

Florida is on the ball. Thanks Jeb.

LA will now be the state to use as a model in not what to do in hurricane preparedness. The other states will look at what happened here and make sure it doesn't happen in their state.

Afraid that's true, CajunMama. Early response for special needs folks is imperative along the GOM and Eastern Seaboard. Absolutely, no argument -- no brainer.

Florida has learned it lessons from andrew these plans were already in effect far before katrina. Florida I would say is a model of hurricane prep.

Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama need to be talking to
Florida in GREAT DETAIL, starting December 1 or so.

I salute the job that the state of Florida has done for preparedness
and helping here in Mississippi.

Yep... Florida knows how to prepare. Of course, they also had 4 hurricanes last year.

All politics aside, I have to agree that Florida does an outstanding job at emergency preparedness, and Jeb does deserve his share of the credit for that.

I understand that after 9/11 he went to New York and learned their emergency preparedness. Think that has helped Fl to be better at responding to hurricanes.

That wouldn't surprise me. Emergency preparedness doesn't start and end with hurricanes. It goes hand in hand with any emergency/disaster. Some emergencies just give a little more notice then others. The person in charge has to know how to keep their cool and react in a crisis. Having a plan in place helps tremendously, but being able to carry it out is almost an entirely seperate issue.

Tidbit of the day: Did you know that most (if not all) subdivisions in Florida have their own Emergency Preparedness Plan that has to be approved by the local government?

Thanks for sharing, Dixie. This has been a long day at work on a dial up laptop. At least as the preparedness guru or "HQ" of the office, everyone knows what I am doing and is coming to my office for info. Fortunately, the clients have been quiet today but I really wish I could get around the Internet a little faster. Of course, in the next few days this maybe my only option if we lose power. Better not complain!

I agree we here in Florida are better prepared for disasters then most places. Florida does an outstanding job at emergency preparedness, and Jeb does deserve his share. I lived in NYC most of my life settle down in Florida 8 years ago wouldn't look back ---and I applaud all the great work they did last year when we got hit 4 times. We don't keep it to ourselves either. We are helping as many Katrina's victim as we can and we do it again. I have to say this old Northerner is now a proud Floridian !

It's good to see. I live in the UK so have never had to prepare for a hurricane but I've kept up with the last few seasons on this and previously other sites like http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk. I've always said that I'm a total chicken and would run at the first hint of life threatening danger, especially when it's Mother Nature at her worst or most perfect, whichever way you look at it.

We had a mild earthquake near here last year and I was terrified - my first tremor so I don't know how I'd react if they were a regular occurrence.

Any employer could go whistle if it came between the choice of keeping my job and keeping my life. No-one owns my life like that, even if it means running for no real reason on occasion. You'd make your plans each time there's a threat and that's how you stay alive.

I so hope she doesn't cause a similar distruction to Katrina and that everyone who can get away, gets away in good time and with no blame for doing the sensible thing if she takes a turn somewhere else.

Storms are wonderful to watch, study, marvel at but being in the thick of it just shouldn't be a consideration or option IMO.

From someone who was affected first hand by Charley last year, I must say I was totally amaze at how everything was handle here during the aftermath.

It wasn't perfect (it can never be) but I am VERY proud of how hurricanes are handle in FL. Jeb truly does a wonderful job!
