Just in. Monroe County schools will be closed on Wednesday, in addition to today and Tuesday.

Hi SWFLmom,

My daughter came home with the same info from Pine Ridge. The principal did say that he doubted they would have school with the potential for some bad weather heading our way.

Palm Beach County can be SO confusing!

Spokeman says with a Hurricane Watch or Warning for any part of the county; school would close. Tropical Storm Watch or Warning would not have the schools closed.

However.... if winds exceed 40 mph anywhere in the county; they will close schools.

Last I looked; a Tropical Storm Warning means winds over 39 mph are expected. So, how can they hold school with a Tropical Storm Warning??? :?:

Bottom line is school tomorrow unless they tell us otherwise.
And of course, we will get little notice... as usual!

have the palm beach county school district people said that schools open tomorrow because they usually would say schools open or its closed..but nothing is being said..im so confused

Well according to the Palm Beach County School District public affairs website, there is currently no change to the normal schedule. So, yes there is school tomorrow as of now. But, I agree with the statement about the winds needing to exceed 40mph. A tropical storm warning should definately close schools. Just my two cents.

Personally I think that the weather will be fine for school to be held tomorrow.
It's just the logic of the 40 mph wind criteria is contradictory to the statements that they have made regarding their policy.
There is also a hot line phone number to call that I think updates quicker than the website (at least it has in the past).

From our local Fox station in Fort Myers:

At this time, all schools will be open on Tuesday although the possibility exists for early dismissals. At the same time, they announced Collier County has declared a "State of Emergency."

Hopefully we'll receive nothing more than a brush from Rita, but it sure does seem strange to concurrently announce a "State of Emergency" and schools being open! :eek:

From Palm Beach County School web site:

TS Rita Update #2 - 9/19/05 - Tri-Rail has informed Palm Beach school officials that, due to possible adverse weather conditions in Miami-Dade County, where the trains originate, there will be no Tri-Rail service for PBC students on Tuesday. PB school officials will provide yellow buses at Tri-Rail stops to transport students to school. Schools and parents should be aware that there will be significant delays in these students arriving at school and returning home on Tuesday. (This only affects students who ride Tri-Rail.)

PBC School District officials are closely monitoring TS Rita on an hour by hour basis. At this time, no changes in the School District's schedule have been made. This information will be updated frequently as new information is received. All decisions will be made and announced as early as possible to allow for maximum planning time. The District will announce any changes to school operations through the media, this Web site, the District's hotline 561-357-7500 (toll free for Boca Raton and Glades area 1-866-930-6001) and The Education Network (T.E.N.) - Adelphia Cable Channel 19.

Collier County Schools Update:

Three Schools to Dismiss Students Early - 9/20/2005

All Collier County Public Schools will open their doors to students and staff as usual this morning, but as a precaution, three schools – Everglades City School, Tommie Barfield Elementary School, and Marco Island Charter School – will dismiss students two hours earlier than normal.

Pretty surprising move for Collier IMHO... I know when my daughter wakes up, she will not be a very happy camper!

Looks like an eye is starting to appear at this time, though, if you were to draw a line due north from the center, you'd find that the center has already passed the longitude of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and, in my opinion, it appears that the center will pass about 50 miles south of Key West.

The current weather here in Fort Lauderdale is cloudy and breezy - not bad at all, and by the increase in traffic by our office in the past 30 minutes, it seems that some are deciding on going to work late today, rather than being closed for the entire day, since the weather is nothing worse than that of a cloudy, breezy day, with scattered showers...
