I hate to say this, but what is stopping this from dropping to Katrina-like intensity? is it the >30C water? or maybe the diminishing <5kts of shear?

I'm sorry, but I have to think this will go sub-910mb maybe sub-900...

Yarr, there already be a poll on this from back when it was still TD 18. :) Though I guess a re-sampling never killed anyone.

/BTW, today is "International Talk Like A Pirate Day". No, really.

890--this storm is going to be very dangerous. They're underestimating it.

Are you serious?

You are normally very conservative, so I'm very surprised by that.

BTW, I'm going for 940. NHC discussion makes me believe this system will have some problems in the Gulf, but still should easily attain major status.

935-940 mb... I don't see perfect conditions in the GOM, but sufficient for a solid Cat 4.

I have a bad feeling about this one--she's not even begun to peak, and is very large already. It has a long trip across the Gulf, and will have no impediments to being a monster. We saw what happened to Katrina, and this one may act accordingly. I think this season is winding down, but has one more beast left--and this is She. :(

I think it won't get as low as Katrina, but then again, when Katrina first appeared (before her South Florida landfall) models had her going on shore, going across the peninsula and then going north to the Florida Panhandle as a Category 1 hurricane. We all know that's not what ultimately happened with her. I don't trust Rita not to try and be like Trina.

Appreciate the explanation, all I can say is I hope not!
